Sukiyaki (Not the song)
I'm coming up to San Francisco and would love to find some really good sukiyaki. Anybody who can steer me in the right direction?

I haven't had it in years and there's been a downhill alert but I used to love Maki's version...quite expensive too. It was $20 or $25 for the dish. You have the option of having it cooked at your table or they can bring it to you cooked - I prefer to have them cook it as the flavor seems to absorb better when they do it in the kitchen.
Another place that my husband I thought was okay was Takara which is also in Japantown but, again, I haven't been there in years.

I haven't tried it personally, nor do I know if Kyu Sakamoto would sing its praises if he were alive, but I've heard that Shabusen on the Buchanan Street Mall is good for this.

re: Xiao Yang
Alas, the Kyu Sakamoto song has nothing whatsoever to do with sukiyaki. :-) However, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any decent sukiyaki in SF. Have to say that I haven't had it at Shabusen, however. I haven't been to Yoko's in San Mateo in a while, and am more familiar with their previous incarnation as Suzuyu, but their sukiyaki always seemed authentic and tasty. It's on 2nd Avenue near Delaware.
