Chinese New Year Restaurants

Hughlipton Jan 27, 2008 04:06 PM

Back in the late 70s there was a very high end Chinese Restaurant called Lew Mitchell's Orient Express on Wilshire just west of La Brea. They would put on a Chinese New Year party with Lion Dancers and a special menu. Is there anyone in the Los Angeles area (County) that does this now? The high end is not nearly as important as the food and the festivities.

In Chinatown, the dragon goes around to all the restaurants and other businesses that put out "food" for the dragon (heads of lettuce), and that want to bring good fortune to their business. There's also lots of accompanying firecrackers. The dragon used to go into Ocean Seafood and thread between the tables, not sure if they're still doing that.

That would actually be a lion operated by two people. A dragon is usually much longer.

Yes, I know the diff. The dragon used to wind thru Ocean. and right, the lion eats the lettuce, which also works out better logistically.

On Feb 9th/10th in Chinatown, the Dragon and Firecrackers will be out and about.
On the 10th, when a bunch of us crazy people are running the Firecracker 5k/10k, there will be Taiko Drummer out there too.
There will be a big Dragon ceremony w/ firecrackers at 8am and all the restaurants and shops will be open. I highly reccommend taking the gold/red lines to get tounion station and walking the block and a half to get down there because all the streets will be blocked off for the run.
Oh, Browdway/College is the apporx location.
      Have Fun!!!
