Are you looking for authentic? If so, check out: Tulcingo del Valle and Mercadito. Believe it or not, Uncle Moe's actually makes some pretty authentic ones, as well.

Tulcingo is very very good. Tehuitzingo up the block is even better.

Puebla on 1st Ave around 3rd Street is hands down the best place for authentic Mexican I've found. There's a grand total of one table and maybe five stools at a counter, so I wouldn't recommend it as an actual dining experience. But for take out/delivery, or a couple of friends just hanging out with some good grub, this is the place.

...and, probably the cheapest of any of the recommendations so far.

My favorites are Taqueria y Fonda ($3 - $3.50 for a MASSIVE taco) and Noche Mexicana ($2 for a large taco), both on the UWS.

The truck (Sobre Ruedas) at 96th near B'way has fairly good ones, as well. They use store bought corn tortillas, but they're not bad b/c the cooks grill them before serving. (Eat it immediately at the truck for the best flavor.)

All of these places will add (inauthentic but tasty) shredded lettuce and tomatoes for gringos.

My favorites have all been mentioned! Haha.

Taqueria y Fonda is my favorite favorite favorite. It's worth the trek to 108th St to eat-in...they'll bring you three generous servings of some of the most delicious homemade salsa and fresh fried tortillas you will ever have.

Uncle Moe's is around the corner from my office and very very good...19th b/t 5th and 6th. I eat here at least twice a week and they never disappoint. Everything is fresh and tasty and served quickly.

The little mom-and-pop hole in the wall on the east side of Sixth Avenue between 13th and 14th. And no, I don't mean Chipotle.
