Megu Midtown RW Dinner Review (long)
Went to Megu Midtown for RW dinner last night with very low expectations, but quite pleasantly surprised. I went to Megu in Tribeca for RW dinner last week and I have to say it was one of the worst experiences I have had at RW over the years and I still tell stories about it. I posted last year too. Anyway, hence the low expectations and some of you might wonder why even go to the Midtown location? I needed a RW dinner in the Midtown area and really did not have much to choose from since I had been to most before. I always choose new restaurants to try during RW. After all that is the whole point of it for me.
Onto the dining experience. Choices were from a selection of 3 apps, 3 entrees and Lady M’s famous green tea crepes cake for dessert (also served at Megu Tribeca last year for RW dinner). For apps, my friend had the panko crusted scallop and asparagus and said it was good. I had the yuba wrapped (bean curd skin) wrapped sashimi (tiny pieces of yellowtail, tuna, salmon) over lettuce. It was good, so little tuna that I was not worried about the mercury content. The other app choice was shrimp cocktail. For entrees, we both had the kobe beef which came out on hot rocks, with a bowl of white rice and a bowl of miso soup at the same time. I would have preferred soup first, but it was fine. I immediately took all my beef off the rocks and put it in my rice bowl because I like beef still mooing. It was tender and very good. The other 2 entrée choices were sushi and silver cod. Dessert was wonderful. Portions were small, but not ridiculously so as it was in Tribeca. Last year, in Tribeca, the waitress actually suggested that we order an extra sushi a la carte dish which was the same price as the RW 3 course prix fixe to supplement 2 RW prix fixe meals, which we did and still came out hungry. That was just too much for me, our check for 4 was more like a check for 6 people at any other RW dinner which definitely did not sit well with me and on top of it I was still hungry and went home to eat more food!
Our waiter was as nice as can be and there was a little confusion as to who did what. Our drink order was taken and some one else asked us again. Our dishes were cleared and we sat forever just chatting which was fine with us since we were catching up anyway. Our waiter came over to us and asked us whether we had been served dessert yet. Just as we said no, someone came behind him and served it to us. All very minor incidents, since he was such a nice and friendly waiter with no attitude at all. It did not detract from our experience one bit. We chatted with him a little about the Tribeca location and asked where was the ice Buddha and found out there is none there. But he did tell us to go upstairs and check out the space there which was very trendy and similar to the Tribeca location.
All in all I would definitely recommend this place for a nice leisurely RW dinner. We were there for 3 hours which I know is long, but it was great for us. The noise level is low and the tables nicely spaced even the tables along the banquets where we were seated.
The worst part of my Megu experience was the male maitre’d who left me a voicemail requesting me to confirm our reservation. He left a 5 minute message stating that they were overbooked because it was RW and that if we arrived more than 15 minutes late that we would have a long wait, blah blah and then he does not leave me the phone number to call back and confirm and I have to look it up to call back. I did not even tell my friend about this till the very end, but I certainly went in expecting lots of attitude and minute portions and was proven wrong on both, of which I am quite happy about.
