(Cost Plus) World Market
What do you think about the quality/prices of their dry goods, including wine and spices (on sale for me at this moment)? I saw a small box of saffron for $5. Anyone know if it's any good? The wine/beer is a bit pricey, but their selection is decent. Their international foods commonly go above the level that my local grocery chains go to, but not by much. Some of the foods they keep are interesting, and the place can save a trip to a specialty food store, if the items needed aren't too exotic. Their cookware and dinnerware is sometimes appealing, but not the best quality. I find they are good novelty pieces to use for to use every once in a while, not everyday. They did have a beautiful decanter l wanted to buy last week, but it's not there any more. Oh well.

I think it is interesting that everyone thinks the wine at World Market is expensive. Maybe it was just the area that I was living in, but I could always find wine at world market for cheaper than I could in other stores. I would frequently get wine from Oregon there at least $10 cheaper than I would find it at the other stores in my area.

I've always enjoyed CP/WM, wine selection and prices are not bad, great for some unusual food items (good chutneys for one), they carry Vosges chocolate bars, some nice gift items to be found, fun paper products ie. napkins, paper plates, wrapping paper. I go to one of their SoCal stores at least one a month.

I actually really like World Market. I primarily go there for foodstuffs, but I have purchased wine glasses in the past which I thought were very reasonably priced. I love trying the different ethnic snack foods and it is often where my friends and I stop to get an interesting munchie and bottle of sake to smuggle into the theater nearby. I also think it is a great place for finding interesting miniatures and baking mixes to fill out gift baskets, which I did at Christmas to rave reviews. I never leave World Market without at least one variety of Haribo Gummies and a bottle of Sriracha(we go through it like mad at my house). I also love their selection of dried spices which I have found to be of better quality than the ones at my supermarket.

A friend recommended world market for wine and while they have a decent selection I found the prices to be higher then the local average.
They do have a wide selection of baking chocolates and imported food, as they are the only market that I have seen to stock the E. Guittard line.
I like to look around and I usually but a few things that i wasn't planning on purchasing, but it is more of a splurge than an necessity.

I think, 'madgreek' you pretty well summed it up.
I too think they are a bit pricey on most everything, not just beers & wines. But you can find food and non-food items there that you generally can't find in other stores/markets. Fun to shop there every once in a great while, but not on a regular basis.

We're not wine/beer people, so we go there for some of the international items like no-sodium Japanese noodles and Indian simmer sauces, McVittie's cookies, and the Junk Foods of the World section. (Fun to sample all the different kinds of chocolate there)
We've got a couple sets of Japanese-made dinnerware that we've got in rotation, and that hold up well in the dishwasher, and I got a cute set of post-modern bird theme salt & pepper shakers from their kitchen gadgets section a couple years back.
