Whole Foods Chicken supplier?
Until recently, if I wanted a great quality chicken to roast or breasts with the ribs attached for broiling, I'd buy from Whole Foods. Tonight was the 3rd time I was disappointed-- they no longer carry Rocky Jr. brand, instead it's Mary's. One of the butchers told me that they had just changed names, but I still can find Rocky Jr at Gelson's, so I don't think so.
Have you noticed a recent change too? BTW I shopped at the WF Sherman Oaks on Sepulveda.
Thanks!

I haven't been to Brentwood WF for about a month but last time there they had Rocky, or at least I thought it was Rocky - it says "organic" on the sign and I thought from the Butcher that was Rocky. The breasts with the bone in and skin on are HUGE. I tried Mary's when they first started carrying it and I never liked the taste of it. I like the Rocky at Gelson's as well as Shelton's organic at Gelson's.

Yup, I noticed the same several months ago at both Westwood and Brentwood Whole Foods. The whole "Mary's" chicken are often tiny, close to 3 lb, while the parts (legs and breasts) are much larger. Even the buthers say it makes no sense. However the prices at WF seem to take huge jumps every few months. Now, I'm just buying whole chix at Ralphs down the street. Not impressed with the quality, but if I'm going to settle for mediocre quality, I'll opt for close to $1 per pound at Ralphs vs. $2.29+ per pound at WF.

re: RicRios
agreed. i bought mary's drumsticks to make my apricot drumsticks and was not impressed with the taste at all. i'm going to gelsons from now on. it may not be organic at gelson's but i find the meats there to be pretty good.
WF in general is disappointing. my mom and i bought a bunch of prepared foods there and all of it was terrible. i think the problem was that the food we got was old.

re: trolley
I am so relieved to hear your stories! I thought maybe I was loosing it LOL!
I think Gelson's chicken is by far the best. They cut and trim all their own birds, no prepacks like Ralph's etc. Their stuff is almost always fresh-- not like the shrimp that I had to return to WF! The butcher swore it was fresh, but the smell when I opened the package nearly knocked me over. I didn't cook it, just made do with odds and ends here and returned it to the store after dinner. I wasn't going to be out $20 for a lb of shrimp!
I normally shop at Gelson's. I do pick up things other places, last night I just happened to be near WF and needed a product from their health section. I think their salads/prepared deli are seriously lacking, and expensive! DH gets bored with the selection from Gelson's so sometimes I visit WF for a different selection. I think the Westwood Village store is one of their best.
