My mom's birthday is next week and she prefers eating seafood over most other foods... any suggestions?? i'm a total food whore so i'm always perusing chowhound, yelp, blogs, etc. i've never been to water grill and have been meaning to go there since ages ago, but i've heard in countless reviews that the place hasn't been as good as when cimarusti was there.. i've been to providence and wasn't too impressed. any suggestions?? (btw, this is my first time posting- i just became a chowhounder a couple mins ago hehe :)

  1. Welcome aboard. I my view, you've just mentioned the two best seafood places in town (Water Grill and Providence). Of the two, I like Providence better, but if you've already been and didn't like it, maybe you should give the Water Grill a try.

I think of these two it depends on whether you'll be ordering a la carte or ordering a tasting menu. If you can afford to splurge on a tasting menu, Providence is probably your best option. I think that if you're ordering a la carte, Water Grill is better.

    2. Eaten at Water Grill and it was amazing, though haven't wanted to spend the money on Providence yet, but will at some point.

A less expensive and quite delicious alternative is The Hungry Cat.

I have reviewed it at my blog. http://www.whaleofatale.net/wordpress...

Yes. Cimarusti left several years ago, and I've been since then. Have never had a barely satisfactory meal there, but the current menu (which is heavy on poaching and exotic spicing) isn't as appealing to me as Cimarusti's was. That's more a matter of personal taste, however.

        2. Water Grill still great post-Cimerusti.

My last couple of visits were this summer (way post-Cimarusti) and they were both excellent.

          2. great.. thanks!! now i'm wondering if i should go back and give providence another try. :) did u guys try the red velvet pudding at wG?? i've only heard raving reviews about that~

Last time I had dinner at the WG, the desserts were spectacular.

Agreed. The desserts are awesome. I've tried the red velvet pudding, but my favorite is called "strawberries" and is the pastry chef's take on a deconstructed strawberry cheesecake. It might be my favorite dessert in LA.

            2. Hands down ... Water Grill.

Providence is fine in its own right, but it's more of a "restaurant that serves great seafood" whereas Water Grill is a "seafood restaurant that serves great food".

              1. Definitely Water Grill.

For a view as well, The Lobster.

Grace always does some good fish too.

Assume you're not interested in sushi?

i love sushi but don't think places like zo and nozawa are birthday-atmosphere hehe. urusawa i can't afford. ;p

                2. The Ivy on Roberson has my vote for the best crab cakes and soft shell crabs (when they're in season)

                  1. Was at Water Grill last month with my foodie group for DineLA. All have eaten at some of the best restaurants in America and all were blown away. The group eats only at the highest rated restaurants in the city, so we're accustomed to great taste and all agreed that the food and service at Water Grill were fabulous! It's been awhile, and I didn't write everything down, but here's a photo of the Sturgeon. God, it was fantastic. BTW, the bar made me a Sidecar that was perfect!

Water Grill is the only reason to be excited about jury duty. Never had a bad meal there. Spring for the tasting menu...
