        <content>Hi All-
just got back from A trip to Maui and had fresh fish almost every night or day.
2 that stood out were a monchong and Spearfish.
The Mongchon was tasty, firm and had a lobster-esk taste to it, the Spearfish was a true knockout too.

My question to you LA chows is where can I find these fish served in LA? Also are these fancy names for John Dory and Swordfish?

Thanks,

AFS</content>

<content>Monchong (note the spelling:) According to what I've read, monchong is a kind of pomfret, and it was deemed a trash fish until recently, http://hawaii.gov/dbedt/seafood/monchong.html

I had some of it on Maui last year and I agree, it was pretty good. Since then, I have seen it somewhere in an L.A. restaurant, as a special daily fish offering, but right now I can't remember where, if it comes to me I'll post again.

Spearfish: Web sources say that it's a smallish game fish related to marlin or sailfish, used in the same way you might use ahi. Also called "Hebi" in Hawaii. http://hawaii.gov/dbedt/seafood/hebi.html I have never seen it in LA.</content>

<content>I just came across some Monchong fillets at Costco for about $10/lb. I was curious about it and picked up a pack to try. It looks a little like Yellowtail, but I don't know how it tastes. The lobster-esk taste sounds appealing. I'll try it tonite.</content>
