Hard to find beer?

My father asked me today if I knew about a beer which is about $10 per 22oz bottle, sold only in cases, made in Oregon and apparently very hard to find. He didn't seem to think it was a Hair of the Dog, Rogue or Deschutes. He seemed to think the name of the beer was like Vixen or Vampire or...?
Does anyone have a clue what he's talking about?

  1. The Abyss? Although that is a Deschutes beer.

      1. Your dad is most definitely talking about Abyss by Deschutes. It is now selling on ebay and Craig's List for $41 a bottle. It is a truly magnificent stout if you can manage to get your hands on any. Markets here in Oregon sold out -- we're waiting for our local publicans to start pouring the draft version.

Abyss sounds like it could be the one but Vesuvius sounds like the right name... will have to investigate both.

$41 a bottle? Good lord...there are numerous bottles still available in the SF Bay Area.

Interesting, I have two bottles I got in a trade. I sampled Abyss on draft, and thought it was pretty rough around the edges. I've had a lot of Imperial Stouts, and to me this one could do with some aging. I'm planning on sitting on my bottles at least a year, if not longer.

Sampled last years about a month ago--it mellows out nicely with a bit of age on it. I still have two sitting in the cellar from last year and re-upped with a couple from this year.
