Has anyone been to Fresh Direct or Cheeseburger Cheeseburger on Rt. 9 in Manalapan?

I see they are open now. In the same shopping plaza as Best Buy. I have not yet been there, so curious if anyone else has ?

  1. A co-worker has been to the burger place....just another "upscale" burger chain was his comment. He likened it to Checkers down the road in Howell. BTW, its Cheeburger Cheeburger ;)

Thanks for the clarification, Robert!! ooopss!!

    2. That parking lot sucked before these chains opened and now sucks even more. I tried Cheeburger Cheeburger the other night, but they were slammed and I wasn't going to wait. I've been to other locations and am not a big fan, but my kids like it enough. The shakes are quite good and they have a good variety (try the PB&J). They will not cook anything less than a medium burger which in my book makes it too overcooked. Haven't been to Fresh Direct yet, but plan on trying it out.

      1. Angelina and jsfein,

Fresh Direct is the outfit that delivers groceries direct to your door in NYC. This place is Fresh City. Cuisine = Asian Fusion. Surprise! Surprise! It's a chain!

Thanks for the clarification RGR. I actually like Fresh City. I've stopped a number of times at one of their locations in a rest area on the Mass Pike. I usually order and enjoy one of their large tuna salad wraps consisting of albacore tuna, romaine lettuce and other fixins in a light dressing. I always feel healthy eating one of those. I also recall that they use kurobuta pork in a number of their dishes. A nice addition as far as I'm concerned.

            bgut,

I'm not a wrap fan. (Or a rap fan. lol) I know there are other things on the menu, but still, it's a chain. When we're traveling, I usually have to give in and choose one because chains are what populate the modern highway landscape. But when we're at home, there are better options. So, despite your praise -- and now with seal chiming in with his negative opinion -- I'll pass. :-)

            1. re: RGR

That's fine RGR. I do agree that chains should be a last resort. However, I must commend it due to the fact it offers healthful options; something that is otherwise in limited supply out there.

              1. re: bgut1

Even the burger chains are offering healthful options these days. During a road trip, I tried one of the salads at Mickey D's. Despite the Paul Newman dressing, it was eh. I'd rather stick with Chicken McNuggets. :-o

          2. re: RGR

Thanks, RGR...no wonder my friend from NY was stunned when I said Fresh Direct opened by us!!! Now I can tell her I called both names wrong!!!

          3. Been to Fresh City - hardly qualifies as "cuisine" at all ... very bleh!

Even the smoothie wasn't that good.

Hey Seal. It looks like we cross posted. Seems that we have had quite different experiences.

              1. re: bgut1

                Interesting...

The only thing I liked there at all was the tomato soup. I prefer the lighter fare at Cafe 360 myself. But I have only been to the one here and will allow that perhaps the others are better only because you liked it :o)

                1. re: seal

Angelina, I posted this topic on the chain board if you want to read more about it. I tried to get in to cheeburger cheeburger (not my choice, but my friends wanted to try it) and even though it was a snowy Tuesday night, the line was snaking around the building like they were giving it away for free. We did try Fresh City and I think I had something called "The Mayflower" which I didn't really care for. Maybe some of the simpler salads would have been better. Like someone else stated, I hate that whole parking lot too, and I don't think I will go back to Fresh City unless of course I'm dragged there on a snowy Tuesday night. Speaking of Tuesday nights, last night we went to Cafe 360 and the place is so cute and the staff friendly - I think we may go back again next Tuesday for a quick bite.

                  1. re: shesallthat

The only thing I've had at Cafe 360 is gelato. Tasted several flavors. All delicious!

              2. re: seal

I agree with seal. I tried the teryaki chicken wrap with lomein noodles. The chicken was bland chicken pieces and the noodles were on the mushy side. Teryaki sauce dumped on it and ta -da- a teryaki chicken wrap. I'd rather eat elsewhere. These chains have got to go and they seem to be infiltrating the area. The weirdest thing to me is the wait staff milling around with trays trying to find your random table number. Fresh City won't work for me. I popped my head into Cheeseburger Cheeseburger and the smell of "burger" grease was so overwhelming, I thought I was going to be sick. I also agree, whoever designed the parking access to these two restaurants should lose their job.....horrific, and dangerous.

                1. re: charmel

Well if everybody thinks the place is bad I guess I have to retract my positive comments. I must have been dreaming since I recall the few times I tried it, the food was fresh and well prepared. Sorry folks.

                  1. re: bgut1

I'm going to try Fresh City. It might be right up my alley. I didn't realize it was a separate restaurant from Cheeburger Cheeburger. Have no interest in C C. so I guess I never looked closely enough. I'm only in that plaza twice a week. ; )

                  2. re: charmel

                    charmel,

Build it in our area and they will come seems to be the mantra of these chains. (Exhibit A: Olive Garden replacing Jersey Freeze.) So, they will continue to be fruitful and multipy because the general dining public keeps patronizing them. Let's face it. The percentage of people with distiguishing palates is miniscule. For most people, when they go out to eat, it's not about the quality of the cuisine; it's about fueling their bods and having a good time. They are definitely not Chowhounds! :-))

                    bgut,

Perhaps you should not be so quick to retract your positive assessment based on the experiences you've had. Despite the fact that all Fresh City outlets have the same menu, it's possible that the cooking skills of the staff can vary from location to location. So, maybe you were lucky, and the Fresh City you tried in Mass. was much better in this regard than the one in Freehold?

                    1. re: RGR

Thanks RGR. Maybe there is a difference in the locations. I guess my only option is to try this new location and see how it compares to my prior meals (if you can call them that).

                2. Thanks for all the respones!! I HATE that parking lot, too!

Saw a movie ( Juno ) and on the way home figured we'd stop and grab a quick and healthy dinner. Perfect time to try, Fresh City. Had high hopes...menu had lots and lots of nice selections.
We were both disappointed. I had the Asian salad, hubby had the clam chowder and steak burrito. LOL, that should tell you right there how we shouldn't have expected any of it to be very good.
Next time I'll try that Cafe 360.
