Fu Wing Low review - Fountain Valley

Posted this in the Man Fook Lo thread, but thought it might also deserve its own thread, as I don't think I've found its own thread on Chowhound.

My brother and I checked out Fu Wing Low for lunch yesterday. Definitely no dim sum carts. I think they had siu mai as an appetizer, but that's about it.

Ordered our standard of chicken chow mein Hong Kong style, beef chow fun, and won ton soup.

The won ton was a bit lacking, being very small and only served 5 pieces, in comparison to our favorites at Sam Woo or SW Seafood, where we get huge shrimp-stuffed won ton, 6 to 8 of them usually.

The chicken chow mein, Hong Kong style meaning crispy noodles, was pretty good, but it was a bit different being served with the thicker bigger noddles instead of the thinner vermicelli-sized noddles, which is usually the norm. Tasted pretty good, large amounts of chicken & veggies.

The beef chow fun was also good, but it seem to lack a bit of soy sauce or something, as it was a bit drier and less oily than what we usually get. Good but not great.

Overall, I'm not sure if we'll go back for lunch, as Sam Woo and SW Seafood are better overall in food quality. $22 for the two of us for the 3 dishes.

We may go back to try it for dinner, as some items looked interesting, and prices were very reasonable.

Closed on Mondays.

    Bummed to hear that it was (like many OC Chinese restaurants) mediocre.

    Was it you, or someone else on the Fu Wing Low thread that mentioned that the owner here would cook anything "authentic style" (i.e., not on their menu) to suit your tastes?

    Were the 3 items you ordered just straight menu items? Or did you ask them to make it more "authentic"? Just curious.

    As a follow-up, I wonder if it's worth going in and asking them to create your own personal favorite dishes that are authentic and see how that turns out? (that's what I was thinking of doing, but not so sure now.)

      It was someone else who mentioned that they can cook things "authentic style".

      We didn't ask for authentic style when we ordered it, as I was curious to see what we would get. The chow mein and chow fun were items on the menu. They had wor won ton soup listed on the menu, but my brother and I usually just prefer the won ton by themselves, so we asked for that a bit differently than how it was on the menu. We probably should have gotten the wor won ton.

      The chicken chow mein and beef chow fun are two of my favorite dishes, so my brother and I tend to use those as our standard barometers to judge Cantonese food.

      Didn't see jook (rice porridge soup) on the menu, but that is another favorite of mine that when it's done right, it's fantastic, especially when served with youtiao (my parents always called it yau ja gwai, which I think is the Cantonese name). Love chicken jook, and I always look for variations where places serve it with duck or seafood.

      Love this stuff, rarely see it on Chinese menus anymore, or the English-translated name is so different that I can't identify it on the menu.

        Easier to find the youtiao during breakfast at taiwanese restaurants. They also put them in a rice roll w/dried pork and pickles, very tasty too.

          yeah, but thats a bit different b/c jook w/ you tiao is very cantonese for breakfast (i think people everywhere eat it for breakfast, but its super cantonese)....

          taiwanese places will be serving doujiang and youtiao for breakfast and the fantuan (rice roll) you're talking about...both A&J and Yu's Garden in Irvine serve although A&J is weekend only breakfast (both have reasonably decent taiwanese breakfast)

            yes, but it's very difficult to find a cantonese place than to find a taiwanese place. if you know of any cantonese places, then do tell. i was just replying to wong when he stated that it is hard to find on menus and then adding that i like the rice rolls.

              in the OC? yeah its relatively difficult to find a place (not sure if SW in Irvine serves it, 99 Ranch might as well) SGV will not be hard to find at all

        it was me that said family friends with the owner (his name is kenny), the clientele is mostly just locals who are regulars (mostly caucasian) and they like generally americanized chinese food. however, if you ask him he can make you almost anything...he's very nice and will be willing to accomodate dishes (i often order off the menu). on the menu, i do like the "house special steak" and the tomato beef chow mein

        its not a dim sum place obviously (and they don't serve it) and i've never ordered (or tried to order) jook (zhou) or you tiao from him as i always go to places that specialize in it (i'm a huge fan of it for breakfast)

          OK, I may just have to hit up this restaurant and ask the Chef/Owner to personally cook some favorite HK / Cantonese dishes "authentic style." :) If it turns out to be good, this may turn out to be a great find for the OC area. Fingers crossed...

                btw if you call him in advance (ask for kenny) and tell him what you want he should be able to get it (even if its not readily available)....i mean part of this could be that im family friends with him, but he's a super nice guy

                  Hi Lau,

                  I live pretty close to FWL and have been in to see Kenny a few times. I'm not chinese though, so I have been mostly asking Kenny for suggestions. So far we have had the honey walnut shrimp, orange beef, salt/pepper pork chop and a few other items that we really like.

                  I'd really like to know what kind of food items would represent more authentic chinese food. I wouldn't have a problem calling ahead to order either, Kenny knows me by name now when I come in, I just don't know what foods he can make that are authentic? Thanks in advance.

          2. The thicker noodles sound like the kind they made at the Hong Kong Noodle Co., around the corner from Man Fook Low. That's the kind I grew up with, and which I find marginally preferable to today's thin egg noodle.
