New take-out chicken option in New Rochelle

I know we get bored with chinese and pizza/italian take-out and while we can order take-out from most restaurants in the area it tends to get quite pricey so I was intrigued when I passed by and saw a new place - Chickens Gone Wild on Boston Post Road in the strip mall next to the one with Fratelli and Red Lotus.

We stopped in to get a menu and it smelled so good my daughter pleaded to get take-out for that night's dinner. We did and thought it very good. The chicken was really, really good - fresh, moist, well-sized, nicely char-grilled, served with pita bread and hot sauces. The ribs, unfortunately not 'real bbq' ie. smoked were still good. Nicely meaty and moist. At least as good if not better than Ribs on the Run. The sides we chose were not terribly exciting - mushy, bland mac and cheese and cucumber salad. The cuke salad had nice large chunks of fresh veggies - cucumbers, peppers and celery but the dressing lacked seasoning. Next time we'll try others.

The menu goes beyond chicken and ribs and includes burgers, fried fish, even pork chops but I think the chicken is really the star. There are also what they bill as healthy choices - turkey burgers, veggie burgers and caesar salads. The young staff were quite friendly and helpful. They don't deliver to my neighborhood but do go to Larchmont, New Rochelle and Pelham. The prices are quite reasonable.

  1. Just saw your posting. totally agree with your assessment....chicken's as good as you say, and sides are just servicable (kinda). I didn't try the ribs....but I never expect genuine bbq in a non-bbq-specialist place.

You gotta love caesar salad being touted as a "healthy choice"! :)

This is the sort of place people underrate...they take a bite of bland mac-n-cheese and write it all off. Or they'd be turned off by the plasticky look. But the people there are sincere, and really taking care with the chicken...and if I lived in this nabe, that chicken would be a weekly hankering for me (at least until I found a really good Columbian or Peruvian alternative)!

    1. I was in there recently looking around. Like you, I ended up taking home a half chicken and had a home-made salad to go with. It reminded me of Piri-Piri chicken that I had in Portugal. I wonder if it's marinated before they grill it. It sure was a meaty chicken; I had some left over. It's not far from me, and you say they deliver to my town. Glad to hear that!

We (or, at least, I) ought to note that this isn't destination chicken, worth going out of your way for. But, again, if I lived near there, I'd be glad it's there.

      2. agree laylag, the chicken is good a side note, I have spotted the owner of Chickens Gone Wild on a couple of occasions doing late lunch at Fratelli in the next strip mall...

Jim, if you're looking for amazing Italian in New Rochelle you should --- according to many posts here - try the new restaurant in the same strip with Chickens Gone Wild. It's called Spadaro. I haven't been yet - going next week on a weeknight since some posters have had problems with service and waits on weekends.

              1. re: laylag

Yeah, tried Spadaro. Worst. Service. Ever.

I spent a big wad of cash on the few paltry items we managed to wrest from the kitchen (tasty...very good for Westchester but not great).

Still hungry, I went afterwards to finally try the ribs at Chickens Gone Wild. Like the chicken, nothing fancy or artisinal, but for fast-grilled ribs (as opposed to long-smoked), I'm not sure you'll ever find much better. I really dug the sauce, too...again, not high-falutin', but there's a courageous wallop of vinegar, and the balance is right on. Nice. Trick is to never ever get sides, which are a total buzz kill.

You did see what she had tacked to her bulletin board, didn't you?

I would think you especially would give her place a second try. That seems to be the accepted idea here.

                  1. re: dolores

Assume you mean Spadaro and not Chickens re: bulletin board. What is tacked up Dolores? We're going next Thursday so I'll chime in with review. Guess I should make a reservation?

                    1. re: laylag

Take a look, laylag, you'll find it interesting.

Oh, yes, it appears a reservation is mandatory.

I hope you don't have to wait too long and get to enjoy the amazing food. A friend just went and loved both the food and Rena.

          1. Is this place take-out only? Do they have any seating at all?
            Does a website exist?

I was thinking of stopping in tonight . . .

            Thanks a bunch.
