Not sure how they compare to other french macaroons in NYC but I really enjoyed the ones at the Macaron Cafe (http://macaroncafe.com/contactus). They have two locations: 7th Ave on 36th Street (near Macy's) and Madison Ave on 59th Street. The location near Macy's is practically a closet but the Madison Ave location is cute and cozy. They also offer lite lunches and provide lovely packaging of their cookies if you desire. Wide ranging flavors as well as season specific offerings.

The macarons at the 59th St. location are horrid (very gummy). Tried them on 2 different occasions, and both times they were awful. Maybe their other foods are better.

Maison du Chocolat makes delicious chocolate and coffee macarons. They don't have the variety of flavors of some others, but the quality is unmistakeably great. There are several throughout the city. My "neighborhood" place is on Wall Street, but it depends upon where YOU are.

I've eaten the macarons from Tal; they're awful! Don't know from where they get them.

+1 for Bisous Ciao. Good news: Laduree is planning to open on Madison Ave. and the 70s sometime soon (I hope). Always have considered Laduree the best macarons anywhere. Hope the NYC version will be as good as Paris.

It'll break my heart if it doesn't open, but one never knows with the economy. I haven't heard that Laduree was not opening.

The level of French pastry shops/chefs in Tokyo is at least as good as NYC, probably better - so it's not that surprising. With that said, I too am crossing my fingers for Laudree in NYC.

I love the French macaroons at Kee's Chocolates, especially the black sesame ones: http://www.keeschocolates.com/mac.html

They have lots of interesting flavors (and good bonbons, too).

Go to a store called The Blue Tree on Madison Ave. It's owned by Phoebe Cates. She made a deal with the former baker from Fauchon in NYC... Anyway last time I was in there, they told me that they were about to start carrying macarons made by those guys. Definitely worth checking out to see if it happened.

before trying again, i think my favorite is still from Kee's chocolate, but I will have to try and get an update soon. Last time I went they were sold out of everything. So, call and make sure they have them before heading over though,

going to second Payard. as close to Laduree as i've had. they also make paris-quality gelees, which makes it worth the trip to the UES.

I tried Payard's macarons with my macaron obsessed friend the two days ago and we're really disappointed in terms of sweetness - it's way too sweet for our liking in comparison to Pierre Herme's dreamy macarons.

I have to say, I've tested so many macarons in this city, at all the usual suspects, and have never come away happy. At this point, I try not to eat the damned things. Will save my weak, weak dollars for my next trip to Laduree (whose macarons I strongly prefer to those of Pierre Herme, but that's another discussion entirely).

Unless something has changed, Fauchon created its own macarons (before closing). If he doesn't still, amazing pastry chef Florian Bellanger was in charge. (I know Florian has since started his own business, but I don't know if he's still in the kitchen at Fauchon.)

As others have said, stay away from Bouchon. They were absolutely horrible. Way to sweet and texturally terrible. La Maison's are pretty good. Unfortunately, you won't find a macaron anywhere in the US that rivals that of a parisian macaron. Montreal is probably the closest place to find an authentic macaron. Also, Fauchon is still closed and the last I heard, they were looking for a new location close to the old one.

I like the ones at Le Madeleine (W. 23rd St.) better than those at Tisserie, Bouchon or Fauchon. Payard's are also very good.

These are by far the best and most perfect ones that I have found in the city. They are about the size of a fifty cent piece.

Bouchons are bigger and not as nice

Fauchon also has macarons - they are shipped in once a week from Paris. I've never had them so I can't comment on their quality, but they are supposedly good.

I love the ones at Almondine and Le Maison du Chocolat.

You may have better luck if you type "macaron" in the search engine. I haven't found a macaron that rivals Pierre Herme (which I vastly preferred over Laduree). However, my favorite one was at Le Madeleine on 23rd between 6th and 7th. Don't eat them right away as they're too cold. You need to let it sit at room temperature for a few hours. Then they only begin to approach the ethereal lusciousness of what a macaron should have.

And while Bouchon Bakery's stuff is generally good, their macarons suck big time

I've tried different macarons in NYC but imo, Madeleine does the best. The passion fruit is to die for.
