New World Market -- Delicious!!

Over the past few weeks, I've tried a number of prepared foods from New World Market on Geary in SF. Almost all of them have been excellent. Here's a list:

Cheese blintzes and cherry blintzes -- really good -- thin crepe and sweet, but not too sweet cheese filling with a hint of vanilla. The cherry blintzes held their shape when fried and the filling didn't run out.

Potato and mushroom vareniki -- absolutely delicious!! Thin egg noodle wrapper and very nice filling.

Two different kinds of sauerkraut. One of them is just labeled sauerkraut and is very fresh, crispy and salty/tangy. The other is called Buriyski-style sauerkraut. This was my favorite. The cabbage is in chunks rather than strips and is packed with garlic, dill sprigs, and a large red chile. Both of these were better after a few days in the fridge.

Dark and light rye breads from The Bavarian Bread Company in San Leandro. These are very nice pre-sliced sour rye breads -- the store has a nice selection of lots of breads from this bakery.

Pork and veal Pelmenyi -- again, nice very tasty filling in a thin egg noodle wrapper.

Piroshki -- the real thing!! Not some deep-fried imitation of a Piroshki. These are baked and look like giant bao. The bread wrapper is nice and they offer three fillings, meat, mushroom or potato. My favorite by far was the potato with the mushroom second and the meat a distant third (I didn't really like the meat filling.) Oops, they might also offer a cabbage filling -- I didn't try that one.

I'll be back to try the stuffed cabbage -- smelled really good -- it was sweet and sour style.

The salads also look good -- I'll also have to try these.

Are there any other things that I should try? I'd love suggestions.

I highly recommend this place.

  1. Perfect half-sour pickles, in the fridge in the back near the sauerkraut. I found the Buriyski style kind of sweet.

    Some of their dried sausages are very good. Sometimes they have samples. I tend to end up with an odd basket of jam and candies and tea and pickles--all the essentials. (And of course don't forget to stop next door at John Campbell's while you're in the neighborhood).

      Windy....Nancy mentioned the Buriyski style of sauerkraut...are you saying there is also a Buriyski style of pickle as well?

        No, I was talking about the same sauerkraut she mentioned. It's next to the pickles in the same fridge. (Although probably it does refer to a style of pickling...)

      1. The cabbage rolls.They usually have them at the hot entree steam table for lunch. My favorite in SF, but the ones I tried were savory and not sweet and sour ...I'm not a fan of that type.

        Have you been to Israel Kosher Meat, Poultry and Deli a few doors over?

        This places looks like nothing, but the baked goods, IMO, are better than New World. I haven't had a chance to tried thier baked dishes yet though. They also have Irving's Challah on Fridays. It has no where the selection of New World, but what they have is excellent. I always wanted to give the different types of caviar a try and New World.

        1. Did they have knishes? Real knishes with potato. I'm dying for one and you can't make just one and I'm afraid to make more than one. Plus it's getting hard to buy chicken skin and fat by itself to render. None at the Berkeley Bowl.
