Favorite chicken salad in New England

rizzo0904 Jan 21, 2008 04:36 AM

I love chicken salad but haven't been able to find any that I'd call "excellent" since moving back up here.

Willow Tree is good, but after one day it starts to separate and you have this puddle of oil.

Supermarket brands are just okay...I think Hannaford may be my favorite. But maybe there is a supermarket I haven't tried that you love.

Thanks for the suggestions!

    Hi rizzo,
Not sure where you're located, but my favorite chicken salad is at Joan and Ed's deli in Framingham, MA. Chunky fresh chicken, nicely diced celery, great fresh flavor. They have a deli counter in front of the restaurant where you can buy many items to take home. The tuna salad is excellent as well.

It can be anywhere...I'm in NH, but I take day trips around the region. And it can be at a supermarket or at a local deli. Just trying to find great chicken salad.

Where I used to live in MD, the best was actually at a wine shop. They had a very small deli area, and their chicken salad was amazing.

Where do you live, how far are you willing to travel for this chicken salad and what makes it special for you?
      Traditional chicken salad?
      Innovative ingredients?
Do you tend to go for the supermarket brands or the smaller places?

As posted above, I'm in NH (Nashua) but I travel around the region so anyplace is fine.

I don't like lots of mayo.

Traditional and plain is fine. Or innovative is great as well. I really don't care as long as it's good.

        Oh, and all white meat.

If you're looking for just a sandwich and not a tub of the stuff, one of my favorite chicken salads in the area is the Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich at Dough in East Boston. Here's the description off their site:

"Grilled chicken, a touch of curry, mayo, red onion, celery, toasted almonds and red grapes topped with fresh romaine lettuce and served on a braided loaf."

        - I go with the regular sub roll over the braided loaf, because I think the braided dries it out a bit.

Another really good chicken salad is at Tasty Gourmet in Medford near Tufts. Try the Caesar Chicken Salad Melt. Very tasty.

In Boston, check out some of these places:

If you get to Martha's Vineyard, go to Humphrey's or the Scottish Bakehouse for very different styles of chicken salad - but very good.

I grew up liking Willow Tree, but it's hard to find in NH. And like you said, you have to eat it the first or second day. Stop & Shop sometimes carries it.
My overall favorite in New England, if you're ever in RI, stop by J's deli in Smithfield. Right off I295. Best sandwiches you'll find.

For supermarkets, I like Highland Park Market in Central CT. But the local Krauzer's has a chicken salad w/cranberries sandwich that is so good I can't believe it. I get one every week.

If you ever get down to Westport, CT, I'm very partial to the Russian chicken salad at Organic Market. It's definitely not traditional (at least for America) but I think it's yummy. It has peas, pickles, onions, hmm, can't think of what else, but I'm going to have to make a stop soon!

Guido's on the Lenox Road (Rte. 7) in Pittsfield, MA, has a pretty mean chicken salad. It's expensive, but it's good. It's made with all white meat and a minimal amount of mayonnaise.

This may sound a bit strange but, Costco has an exceptional all white meat chicken salad with dried cranberries, walnuts etc. It's probably the best store bought CS I've tasted.

I used to get Hummel's chicken salad at the corner store near my home. Come sout of West or New Haven I think.

Pasta Vita in Old Saybrook, CT has a killer chunky chicken salad among other yummies (p.s. if you go, be sure to check out their Amaretto Fudge Gelato!)

Downtown Providence - Nodbody's Deli Basset St.
They have the best chicken salad. Its finely diced (kinda like a spread) perfect amount of mayo, celery and s&p. Its perfect on the French bread with some bacon. You cannot go wrong with this - scouts honor

Roche Brothers market is very good. There is one in Acton, MA (I think that is the town) and I believe there are locations.
