Dinner at 10pm tonight?

Hi Chowhounds.

We are dining at 10:00 on a Sunday night. I'm thinking I'd like a brasserie or bistro vibe--someplace that's open relatively late and is quite serious about their meat, seafood and wine. Straightforward, gutsy (literally and figuratively) cuisine is preferred.

For occasions like this, I usually rely on Blue Ribbon (Soho and Brooklyn), but would prefer to broaden my horizons. I was considering Balthazar, but that place gets wildly mixed reviews on this and other websites.

Perhaps somewhere more consistently praised--or more obscure.... Any neighborhood will do.

  1. Marseille, on the corner of 9th Av. & 44th St., is a favorite or mine and many other Hounds. Very good French/Mediterranean cuisine served in an attractive brasserie setting. Whenever we've eaten there, the vibe has been quite lively; however, we've never been there late on Sunday. Open until 11 p.m. on Sundays.

    1. Little Owl in the West Village is a go to place for us. They may have an available table for walk-ins during the 10 pm time slot tonight. It's more bistro-like than most French bistro vibe in the city and the food, while not French, is good American comfort food. Wine list is OK.

sounds good, but menupages says they close at 10pm on Sundays.

10 pm may be the closing time, but I remember showing up at around 9:45 pm on a Sunday and were ushered in to a nice table and a very good meal.

Marseille's website says 11 p.m. I would think that's more accurate than Menupages. Of course, a call to the restaurant would confirm it.

        2. These are good suggestions, but the listed hours for restaurants are generally the times they will accept reservations for, so for example if it says 10 pm that is the latest they will seat you, not the time you have to be out by. Call the restaurants or check opentable to verify.
