Best Low Fat Shredded Cheese

I just had the worst- Sargento. It became shell-like after I put it over my chicken. Became very crunchy. Got me so irritated I am writing a post about it! If I am going to spend calories on cheese, it better be worth it. What shredded cheese do you recommend?

  1. I have found, gasp, soy cheese to be a better option than most low fat cheeses. I like Veggie Slices/Shreds. This discovery was made when a friend who was a vegan came over for dinner. Don't get me wrong I love cheese, real cheese, but when you are trying to cut fat or calories soy seems to be a great way to go.

Thanks Bubblet- I will absolutely try some. I never even thought about that.

What are "veggie slices/shreds" and are they available at Safeway or Trader Joe's?

        1. re: ceekskat

Safeway, Kroger, Hi-Vee all carry them. I think TJ does too but I am not certain. It usually is in the veggie burger case with the tofu, boca stuff and the various vegetarian items.

I love the Soy Cheese Cheddar and Mozzarella blend from TJ's! It's even got fiber alongside the protein and calcium in it, and tastes and melts great to boot!

I want to second the nomination! Cabot makes a 75% red. fat cheese which works very well. It melts fine, and tastes pretty good. I would prefer a really sharp flavor, but oh well. This is absolutely the best red. fat cheese I have tried. It is not pre-shredded, but I've grated it w/ no problem.

          2. I bought a bag of low-fat shredded cheese from Trader Joe's. Not bad at all, and it lasted a long time in the fridge without drying out or getting mouldy.

TJ's has some great low-far cheeses, period. shredded, sliced, name it.

cabot is excellent as well [and sadly, impossible to find here in los angeles!]

I second the veggie shreds. Many a.m.'s I'll make egg beaters with onion, tomato and veggie shreds. They really melt well and taste good.

Umm, doesn't TJ's itself carry Cabots 75% reduced fat cheese. That's the only place I've ever seen it.

                  1. re: mlgb

really? i've never seen it. i'll have to check - thanks for the heads-up.

I should have said that I've seen the chunk version only, not shredded!

                      1. re: mlgb

actually, i prefer the blocks. i'd rather shred my own ;) thanks!

              2. I'm going to second (or third) the Trader Joe's low fat cheeses. They melt well, and are pretty close to the real thing.

I third/fourth Trader Joe's. The shredded 3 cheese mix is pretty good and I just bought a log of low fat chevre that is really yummy. I've been putting it in pasta dishes, on crackers, etc. and love it.
