looking for some advice about where to take dad for a super-tasty birthday dinner somewhat close to Mass MoCA. I'm willing to drive a bit and spend for great food and special atmosphere. Thanks for any advice.

Try the Gramercy Cafe, right across the street. I haven't eaten there in a few years (there's been a recent expansion) but the food is consistently solid, fresh, well prepared. Nothing too out of the ordinary but well liked by most.

I've had a couple of really nice meals at Milan (I think it's also called 155 Main) on Main Street in North Adams. They do a roasted beet and goat cheese salad that's really wonderful. I also loved the skirt steak they had on the menu.

We like Cafe Latino (at MassMoCA itself) for the food; atmosphere is a little cold although service is usually nice. But for festive --- why not go the extra mile (or three or four) and take him to Mezze, in Williamstown. All your qualifications: a bit of a drive, it'll cost a little more, but the food is usually great and the atmosphere really nice. We prefer the bar room (warmer, more informal), but the dining room might suit your celebration better. Have fun wherever you go!
