We are planning an upcoming road trip to visit family who have recently moved to this area and are looking for good chow tips. Particularly BBQ, but we eat anything. Nothing fancy, as there will be three small children in our party. We'll have a car, so suggestions for anything in a 15 or 20 mile radius is fine. I don't know the area at all, so addresses would be helpful. Thank you!

  1. Anyone? I'm guessing this is really rural then and there is nothing around?

    1. While I haven't eaten there, local reviews of the restaurant at the state park at Caryville have been positive. Unpretentious place, reportedly, with good bbq and a pleasant setting.

        Thanks! I'll look it up!

      2. I don't think the restaurant at the state park at Caryville has BBQ any more but it still might be a good local experience. I suggest that you get on I75 and head south toward Knoxville. At the Emory Road exit, you will find a Buddy's BBQ inside a gas station. This is a local chain with a very good barbecue. I like the small pork sandwich with slaw on it. Also like the beans. They have Buddy's all around Knoxville but I think this is the only one inside a gas station. This exit gets lots of tourists from I75 so that is the reason for the location. For a nice lunch or dinner go to the next exit-Merchant's Road and look for Puleo's. This is a local chef who has a place with an interesting combination of Italian and Southern. Fantastic steak, great lasagna, yummy turkey and dressing. Very eclectic menu. Or try Littons, they make their own buns and grind their own meat, their cakes are unbelievable. Again get off at Merchant's Road and go east. Merchant's Road becomes Cedar Lane. Follow that until you get to Broadway. Go across Broadway and you are on Essary and there is Litton's=family owned and now the 4th generation.

        1. Kat, you might want to consider Quik Stop BBQ in Caryville. It's a market and deli. They also cater and are quite good.

So, the trip is over and I have to shout out a great big thanks to Frank for suggesting the Quik Stop. We ran out for a last minute take-out lunch for a group of people and Quik Stop provided us with tasty ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and pints of slaw and beans, Everyone loved the cole slaw as it was different from what we usually get here in NE, the cabbage was finely grated and it actually had taste, rather than just mayo flavor. I appreciate the other suggestions too, although we did not have time to try them all. Thanks again!
