Where can I find good low-fat muffins and/or pastries. So far all i've found are some decent ones at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, though I know there must be more in the L.A. or San Fernando Valley areas. Any suggestions?

I like Zen Bakery (10988 Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90064 Phone: 310-475-6727)

They especialize in sugar-free or honey-free (Items are sweetened with fruit juice) but carry a lot of low-fat and fat-free items too.

It has been my experience that these fat free and low fat products sweetened with fruit juice actually have higher calorie counts than the high fat version. Sometimes alot more. I am not sure what is worse. We eat more fat free foods and people on average are more obese than when we didn't have these foods offered. Are Snack Wells responsible for the ballooning of America?

I agree totally, but as a diabetic, I am pleased I can get my sometimes sweet tooth satisfied occasionally and not send myself into a coma.

It's all about moderation, of course.

There's a chain that are in malls called Paradise Bakery that I thought had the best l.f. muffins of all time. I know they went out of business in the Glendale Galleria. But they may be elsewhere - I think they were at the mall on Woodman and Riverside. Urth Cafe in Hollywood, too. True enough though, I think they're probably super unhealthy in the end.

Mani's on Fairfax, north of sixth, is devoted to the kind of stuff you're looking for. (If I remember correctly, they began because health-conscious Danny Devito needed fake donuts to eat in a movie, hence the creation of their "faux-nuts".) The best desserts there, in my opinion, are the chocolate dipped chocolate chip cookie and the chocolate eclair. If anyone knows whether these two desserts are actually at all not terribly bad for you, I'd love to hear.
