Brazilian in BK. Finally.

Is this the same owners as Favela in Astoria? Doesn't sound like it...

I walked past this today and they're open. It looked nice inside and the owners were really really friendly. Anybody been yet? It seemed to me that it had a different name now, but maybe I'm just mis-remembering.

Well I guess I have to answer my own post!

I went tonight to this place, which is called Miss Favela. It's on the corner of Wythe and S5th. The interior is really open and airy and friendly, and just a nice atmosphere in general. I sat outside on a small patio area that was just big enough for a few tables. The only downside is proximity to the Williamsburg Bridge, but the noise was much less bothersome than I expected.

I'm no expert in Brazilian food, though I've eaten a lot of it. I though Miss Favela was excellent. For appetizers we had a sort of little fried chicken chunks, which were about the best I've ever had that sort of dish. They had little bits of garlic on top, and were greatly aided by a hot pepper vinegar on the table. Finger food for sure. Also cheese bread, which were really small and round, like little half-dollar delights.

Entrees: we had two varieties of steaks, and I can't quite say the difference - maybe one was grilled and the other cooked in a pan? The grilled one had a nice charred flavor, but the pan-cooked one came with extremely delicious greens that I think they called collards, but reminded me of nothing as much as the "gambay" from Mr. Chow, which is flash fried kale.... of all strange references to make. weird. good.

Best of all, they came with bowls of rice and beans -- very white fluffy rice and rich black beans. There was a kind of fresh salsa that went along with it, a vinegary mix of onions and peppers and tomatoes I think.

We also had a really nice bottle of rosé that wasn't too sweet, and we tasted some cachaça infused with guarana that was definitely, er, eye-opening about 10 minutes later. All in all, a really welcome addition to the neighborhood, especially now that Pies and Thighs has left that block. Did I mention how friendly they were? I'll be interested to see how other folks like it, as I certainly can't speak to authenticity, etc.

Lastly, they had plenty of seafood and vegetarian options, like a really crazy sounding fish stew, and some concoction of the rice and beans with vegetables and various other things with varying degrees of vegetarianisms.
