I had a great meal and very good service at Miriam on Fifth Avenue last night. Monday and Tuesday they offer a half-off for wine special, a nice touch. I ordered a crisp, moist red snapper with yellow beets and pieces of artichoke in a light, beautifully spiced, creamy sauce. All the flavors harmonized perfectly. Others loved their dishes as well. I've read comments on this board about spotty service, but our waitress was attentive and knowledgable. Well worth the reasonable tab.

    I had one meal at Miriam about a year ago and it was so amazingly "meh" that I'll never return.

    There's too much good food in this city to waste calories on mediocre food.

      To me, Miriam has always been better than meh. The lamb chops are always delicious. The burekas, too. At least one of the fish dishes... usually the one that comes with chorizo... is very worthwhile. I have no idea what people are talking about when they complain about the service.

        I always thought Miriam was a pretty solid place, nothing incredible but still a good meal. Then again, I don't go there expecting to be "wow'd." The spanikopita and hummus appetizers are tasty (though I wish we could have 2 or 3 of those hot pita breads for that hummus). The kreplach entree is good but I would have liked a couple more ravioli. The beef brisket and the lamb tagine are also good but not stellar and could have each been 2 dollars less. The dishes definately dont compare to this fantastic lamb couscous maison with prunes, apricots, caramelized onion and raisins from La Maison du Couscous in Bay Ridge

      You're lucky, but unfortunately in the minority. The last two meals I had there were downright awful. They used to be decent (not amazing) but they've definitely slid.

        I have had several mediocore to bad meals at Miriam. The tues half price wine is a good deal but the food and service are subpar.

          Why go back if you've had "several mediocore to bad meals" and the service and food is "subpar"?

            I won't answer for Josh but I go back to bad places if they are cheap enough because I want to give them a 2nd, even 3rd or 4th chance. Lobo is my best example. I WANT them to be something better.

            Come to think of it, I've given them about 65chances and am almost always dissatisfied. Blame the tequila, I guess.

            Miriam? Mediocre. Not inedible, just mediocre. The service can be atrocious though.

              Miriam isn't cheap enough to qualify. As for Lobo, there isn't enough tequila in the world for me to give them a second chance. Maybe I'm not as optimistic as you and Josh.

              because i was with larger groups and wanted to try the place a couple times before coming to a particular conclusion. as larry pointed out, i really wanted miriam to be good.
