Where are the great vegetarian and/or macrobiotic restaurants? I don't mean we'll throw a portabello on the barby for you, nor do I mean we'll have one fancy veg. special. Are there strictly veg. restaurants doing interesting food?
Is Inn of the Seventh Ray still open in Topanga Canyon, a little way inland from PCH? I haven't been there in a long time, but it is (or was) macrobiotic. The setting is beautiful. We used to go there occasionally for brunch, and I remember enjoying it each time. Unfortunately, I don't remember much of what was on the menu.
When I raised this issue some months ago, several chowhounds were kind enough to suggest a few possibilities (see the link below), but the bottom line appears to be that there is no such thing as a great vegetarian restaurant in Los Angeles. I like the very modestly appointed Madhu's Dasaprakash (a south Indian restaurant mentioned in a number of earlier posts), but the restaurant at 12217 Santa Monica Boulevard has been closed for over a month and may be gone for good. Yahoo yellow pages turned up a Cerritos location (11321 183rd Street, 562 924-0879), but I have never been there.
I don't want to steal his thunder, but Richard Foss (who at this moment is driving over the Alps), is in the final stages of writing a book on where to eat Vegetarian in Los Angeles. Were he in town, I am confident he would have much to say on the subject so stayed tuned...
