Whats up with Bertas? SD
My wife and I eat at Berta's every couple of months and enjoy it greatly. Food is solid and reasonably priced and a bit different from the usual Latin American fare in San Diego. They also send out the occasional email promo for their special offerings which always seems to whet our appetites for the place.
Service can be a bit sketchy if they're busy on an off night but these little things can be forgiven, eh?
All in all, one of my favorite secret spots in SD.
Nah, I've gleaned a lot more out of the postings here than I'll be able to repay in-kind...
I love the Chilemal, a sort of pork braise/casserole loaded with flavor. I have a hard time getting past it on the menu. I also enjoy the lamb fricasse - listed as Cuban Puerto Rican. On the appetizer list, I like the Pincho Moruno.
It's another one of those places that you wish you could eat at often enough to thoroughly explore the menu, but fortunately or unfortunately, that's not the case. Too much else to enjoy these days in San Diego...
The fact that this little gem exists in the underbelly of the Old Town tourist sprawl is reassuring somehow. Good to know that low key quality can thrive in the midst of near-overwhelming noise.
