Zeppole at Dopo (Oakland)

Dopo recently added lemon ricotta zeppole to the dessert menu. Phenomenal. Light as a pillow, the ricotta gives it a silky texture and the lemon a nice tang. Dusted with powdered sugar, but not too sweet. Fried to order, they arrive to the table fresh and warm. They are slightly larger than donut holes and come five for $7.

All the food at Dopo is delicious, but this is a special treat. Good zeppole are hard to find and these are more than good. Our server says they are (almost) always on the menu.

They also have a cannoli, but we were just too full.

Dopo is on Piedmont Ave in Oakland.

    Yep - I had them there last week and I was stunned. Phenomenal is a perfect description!

      Thanks for the tip, Morton. I might stop by just to wipe out the memory of the awful zeppole and cannoli I had at Hopkins St Bakery a few weeks ago. Seriously, in both cases, the worst I've ever had ... ever.

        I find most of the pastries at Hopkins Street amateurish. Breakfast buns several steps down from La Farine, croissants a distant relative of Masse's, etc.

          They seem to have changed hands within the last couple of years. There was a brief period when they seemed to have someone who really knew how to bake, but she seemed to disappear.

            They lost their head baker 2-3 years ago. She was great.

          After lurking on this site for years and reading all of your wonderful posts I finally had to open an account just to agree with Morton and say thay those zeppole are fantastic!! The cannoli were good as well, but tasted pretty much like your standard cannoli. I would even skip ordering one of Dopo's fanstastic starters just to save room for those donuts.

            Hey, no one mentioned that Dopo only offers its lemon ricotta zeppole at dinner-time!!

            I went all the way to Piedmont Ave for lunch today and ended up having diplomatico (espresso brandy-flavored sponge cake & chocolate mousse) for dessert instead. It's good, but it was their zeppole I was after!

            I'm only in Oakland on business this week & won't have opportunity to dine there again before leaving town. Oh well, there's always a next time I guess.
