Recent reviews of West Side Lounge?

I'd love to hear about any recent experiences to WSL - we used to eat there semi-frequently and loved it, but then had a couple of not so great experiences in the past year or so (and they stopped making their ice cream sandwiches, which were divine)...

Is it worth checking out again? Thanks!

  1. Hmm. We used to eat there frequently too (like 3-4 years ago) and then they went through a bad patch and we stopped going. We've been back a couple of times recently, and it's been great, although we do miss the ice cream sandwiches. Here's a (semi-) recent experience:

    1. I had a similar pattern there, but I think it is time for us all to let go of that apparent "rough patch". Every time we've been in the last six months (6-7 times total), we've loved it. Really solid menu with interesting choices, lively setting after 7ish, and easy to get a weekend table before that. Definitely worth going to. The masa haddock tacos are really good...

      1. I went to West Side Lounge this past Friday for drinks and appetizers. Summary: Good bar food, great atmosphere, borderline service.

Bar was probably 1/2 to 2/3 full when I got there at 6:30ish. Friend was already waiting, had his martini. I sat down and waited. And waited. Both bartenders were barely busy, one making a couple drinks and chatting, the other cutting up lemons and doing basic side work. After about 10 minutes of solid nothing-ness, my friend called out to one and asked for a refill. At that point, I was finally noticed and able to order my drink.

For apps, we had fried calamari (fine but generic); flatbread with caramelized onion, mushrooms, arugula, and some kind of cheese (again, good but not amazing); crab cakes (very nicely crisp, but hardly 'lump crab'); and crostini with warmed olives, roasted garlic and peppers (YUM - great little starter/snack, especially for $5).

Once I finally had my drink, refills came promptly and service was friendly. Again, though, it took several minutes of "attempted eye catching" to order food. The couple next to us were obviously locals - chatting with the bartender nonstop, perfect service, etc. Apparently the only way to get service in this neighborhood bar is to actually be FROM the neighborhood.

        1. Decent bar food (the Independent is better imo) and marginal service.
