Looking for UWS Rec for Saturday Night

nancyl126 Jan 10, 2008 04:52 AM

We are meeting friends for dinner on Saturday night and looking for a casual, comfortable place with good food (obviously) on the UWS. Places we like that would fit this in other neighborhoods would be Crispo, Itzocan Bistro, I Coppi. Any cuisine except Indian...

You might give a try to the Argentinean restaurant on Columbus, Café Ronda. Great ambience, good drinks (plenty strong) and the price should be around what you're looking for.

Epices du Traiteur might work for you. Med/Tunisian that meets the requirements of casual and comfortable with good food.

Pasha on West 71st (near Columbus) has excellent Turkish food. I also hear Kefi is excellent (Greek) but they don't take reservations. Other suggestions:

        Dovetail (recently opened)
        Mermaid Inn

'cesca...you can sit at the bar and have a full meal..or do the dining room.

I second MMRuth's suggestion of Nice Matin. Sort of a French version of Crispo. I don't live in the neighborhood but I find it well worth going out of my way for.

Kefi. I thought Nice Matin was mediocre.

I haven't been yet, but there have been a couple of positive reviews of La Rurual - Argentinian.

How about the P.J. Clarke's at the Empire Hotel? I glanced in recently, and it looked lively and certainly casual.

I don't kn ow how far up on UWS you are looking; but ... Maybe some place like Gennaro would work for you (Amsterdam/92), really good Italian, casual. But they don't take reservations and get really busy on Saturday night. We also like Gabriela's (Columbus/94) (DH is addicted to the "mango-rita") and Pio Pio (Amsterdam/94) for Peruvian and really good sangria. For basics like good salads and decent mac n cheese, we like Fred's (Amsterdam/83) and I'll second the Zeytin rec too.

Nice Matin might work for you - only been once but enjoyed the food and wine list. Ouest is also v. good, but a bit pricier.

Normally I would second Ouest or even suggest Compass or Telepan, but your mentioning those more casual places makes me steer you closer to places like Josephina's, Fiorello's or O'Neals (all across from Lincoln Center)
For a Turkish/Mediterranean delight, Zeytin on 85th & Columbus would fill the bill nicely.

I think Telepan is the best suggestion for that area. I think it can be very casual (within reasonable limits). Granted I have seen people dressed up but have seen just as many in jeans. I guess it depends on what's going on at LC.

We are looking for something less expensive than Telepan or Compass (even though I know that the prix fixe here is a very good deal) We also do not want something like Fiorella's or Rain or Calle Ocho.
