  1. Sam's Cafe (Southwestern) is at the Arizona Center, and so is Mi Amigos (chain Mexican)

Compass Room (American) is the revolving restaurant on top of the Hyatt.

Matador is on Adams. (More authentic Mexican)

    Those are all close by.

yes but i think they requested a 'good meal' ;)

obviously i'm joking but in clear conscious i couldn't send anyone on vacation to any of those spots. maybe sam's cafe. but the compass room or the matador? yipes..

honestly if you're wanting something close to the herberger, the only place that far downtown i could recommend for dinner is perhaps coach and willies. ive heard some people say kinkaid's is underrated, but ive not been there and ymmv.

honestly i would refer to your thread on the heard and pick one of those choices. you're still really close, within 5 miles, of the herberger.

No, i agree for the most part. Compass Room can be fun if you've never been. Its the whole experience of going. I've been twice, both times it was a different chef. I may go again when they get a new one.

I'll stand by the Matador though. It ain't a pretty place, but the green corn tamales there are some of the best in town. At least they used to be when I worked down there.

But the part i agree with would be not eating in that area. Phoenix downtown is Monday-Friday 8-5 for the most part still, as much as they have done to revitalize it.

Head north to Midtown, or even higher.

I haven't been to the Matador in ages, but I don't remember anything really bad about it. I need to get back there soon -- especially since there's a rumor going around that the Hyatt may expand and tear down the parking garage on the south side of Adams. That's the building that houses the Matador.

    2. It might be more beneficial to know where you are staying to perhaps recommend something on the way - quality options are somewhat limited in that area.

      1. As mentioned above, the options within immediate walking distance of the theater aren't thrilling. Nevertheless, here are some:

Kincaids --. It's a small chain based in the Twin Cities and prepares reasonably good steak and seafood. This would be my first recommendation if you wish to park once for dinner and theater.

Sonoma Casual Dining -- A new place at Van Buren & First Ave. It's semi-fast food (order at the counter and wait for your number to be called), but the food is prepared to order and generally quite good.

Going a little farther afield (half a mile), there are additional options at the north end of Downtown (fka Evans-Churchill)

The Roosevelt -- great pub with limited food menu

Fate -- Chinese and Asian food in an artsy setting

By the way, your constellation of dislikes -- Greek, sushi, and Middle Eastern -- is an interesting one. Do these three have something in common? Please understand I'm not questioning your taste or your wife's -- I just find this combination so interesting that I had to ask.

        1. Stoudemire's in the Collier Center is not bad either. The menu is high end sports bar with some great preparations that Eddie Matney helped define for them.

There is also a A Big Fat Greek Restaraunt in the Arizona Center that is OK meditteranean food, not great but not bad.

Also Portland's up Central and Roosevelt ways is pretty good.
