Good Indian near downtown LA

Peter Shirley May 7, 2001 05:39 PM

I'll be attending a convention at the
LA Conv Center and staying at the LA
Atheletic Club. Any recommendations
on Indian places that are cabbable
and good? Pricey is fine, but requiring
nice clothes is not :^)

I like The Taj on La Cienega (it used to be Gaylord). I'm sure there are better one's further East, I'm just not that familar with anything east of La Cienega.

On Grand, btwn 8th & 9th, deep in the heart of the seedy Stillwell Hotel, is Gill's. The fact this rather unkempt place has survived in its bizarre location is a tribute to its food, which is consistently good & consistently true to its roots. Fancy it ain't. Take a breath, walk briskly through the hotel's unpretentious lobby, past the stuck-in-the-50s bar, to the restaurant in the rear. It is memorable.

Try the chicken sag. I've been traveling from Laurel Canyon to this place for that dish, plus a lot of naan, for about 15 years. The only restaurant equal for me is Gandhi in Las Vegas.

Paru's is a quite wonderful Indian vegetarian restaurant in Hollywood, not far from downtown, at 5140 Sunset Blvd. (on the south side of Sunset, west of Normandie, east of Kingsley). Paru's even has a website, describing their dishes and including an internet discount coupon at the link below.
