Best Toronto dimsum near 401

Ottawa dim sum standards seem to have sunk to new lows and we need to refresh our taste buds. Does anyone have suggestions for dim sum within 10 minutes of the 401 on the stretch between Pearson and Whitby?

  1. I can't remember if it was recommended to me here, but Very Fair Chinese Restaurant has pretty good dim sum, and is located close to Kennedy/401. It's been a few years since I've been there, but the clientèle was usually 95% Asian. What I loved most was being seated at a large table with other diners, with the Chinese grandmothers being my favourite.

    1. Dragon Dynasty is quite close to the 401 (Brimley and Huntingwood). If traffic is not too bad, Ruby Chinese restaurant at McCowan and Finch is about 10 mins from the 401 too. It is a nice large restaurant with good variety of dim sum.

      1. 2 I know of & both of them I don't know names:
        1. Bayview Village - N on Bayview 1 block off 401 - Dim Sum is right across from Oliver Bonnacini's
        2. N on 404 take Woodbine exit - 1 block N of Woodbine/Steels on the E side - amazing.

I think you are referring to:
          1. Yen Ching Palace Restaurant (2901 Bayview Avenue)
          2. Spring Villa Chinese Cuisine (7301 Woodbine Ave)

Not sure how you did that but thanks! I wanted to find the one on Woodbine - have to admit have only been there with someone who ordered for me and it was so very special - will be trying to repeat it on my own!!!!

Just up the road from Spring Villa (closer to hwy 7 across from Costco, on Lanark) is Celestial Garden. I took a client there once and they had a menu with pics of all the dishes. There aren't any carts going around on week days. But my client found the pics very useful for ordering things that she knew by sight but not by name.
In a odd side note I have been to this restaurant many times before that lunch visit, but had never seen the picture menu.

        2. If you don't mind going a few kilometers west to highway 10, Emerald Chinese Restaurant generally has pretty good dim sum, though the staff can be sometimes be rude according to some. I think that some customers become a bit impatient not realizing that most staff there have few if any english skills. To me, thats usually a positive at a Chinese restaurant.

          1. I would support Sweetie's original response: Dragon Dynasty and Ruby Chinese Restaurant are both great (Ruby's has better value, I'd say.)

I recently tried Grand Chinese Cuisine at the Doubletree/Hilton at 655 Dixon, and it was quite satisfying, a little fancier (and more expensive) than typical dim sum, however.

Glad to hear that! I'm definitely all for Grand Chinese Cuisine. It is more expensive than other places but ... Toronto dim sum is not fantastic, unless you're willing to spend a bit more cash, IMO.

            2. I go to Lao Lee Beef Noodle Seafood Restaurant just west of Yonge on Steeles in one of the plazas on the North side of Steeles. Food is served on carts, good variety. should only take 5-10 minutes to get to from 401
