Gargoyles: down and up

Just a quick note on a 'hound favorite. We ate there a couple of weeks ago, between Christmas and New Years, and had a poor meal and even worse, poor drinks. I had a gin something which just tasted like gin on the rocks (which I don't mind, but it's not what I ordered), and my DC had the figitini which tasted like someone had spilled the whole bottle of vanilla in there. Her burger was fine, my whatever it was wasn't too memorable. The tuna deviled eggs, though, give Oleana's a run for their money. We were disappointed. I suspect that their A team was on vacation.

We went back this weekend and are happy to report that everything is back to the usual standard of deliciousness. Greek salad with fried peppers: unusual and tasty as usual; might have used a bit more feta, but that's nit picking. Fish dish with sea bass substituted for snapper (?) was great. The fish was perfect but mashed with cream sauce even better, with just enough salty olives to cut the richness. Drinks up to the usual high standard. Phew, we were worried.

    Sad to hear that (aside from the "figitini" -- over which I can't muster any sympathy). Four of us went, also between xmas and new years, and we all had excellent food. My "signature" duck w/sticky rice was great, as was my wife's steak. Forget what the in-laws had, but theirs was good as well. All had apps too, and we passed plates and tried everything, and there really weren't any bad notes in the whole meal. Nice wines by the glass as well. I know chef Santos was in the kitchen that night; maybe he wasn't the night you had your so-so meal. In any case, I've never had a bad experience, and still think of it as a go-to place.

      Everytime I go to this restaurant I am let down. I think maybe they should stick to the basics, which the chef seems to get right and stop playing with trying to be trendy with the food science based stuff.

      Glad to hear that those tuna tartare deviled eggs are on the menu. I used to LOVE those when Santos served them at the now defunct Dedo.
