Dough!

Anyone been to Dough in East Boston? I've been there several times and figured it was worth mentioning. It's a little off the beaten path, but well worth it. The sandwiches are top notch, some of the best in the city. My personal faves include (descriptions copied from their website www.doughpizza.com):

The Vermonter - Maple turkey, smoked Gouda cheese, bacon, sliced green apple and fresh red onion with a sun dried tomato mayo. Served on extra thick sliced multigrain and baked in our oven

The Border St. Special - Chicken cutlet topped with thinly sliced prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, roma tomato and fresh basil, drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette and served on a braided loaf

Curry Chicken Salad - Grilled chicken, a touch of curry, mayo, red onion, celery, toasted almonds and red grapes topped with fresh romaine lettuce and served on a braided loaf

They also have great pizza and some creative pies at that. The Z-Berg is my goto pizza on the list. Prosciutto and carmelized onions - very tasty.

  1. I have yet to try any of their food but not for lack of trying. I dont have a car and need to get delivery. They close at 9 but stop delivery at 8:30. Random hours for a pizza joint, but if thats their hours then so be it. Only problem is that for the third time, I call at 8 and am told that they are done for the night. I say but you close at 830. We're too swamped right now and I can't send the guy out to you. WHAT??! WHat kind of a way to run a business is that. He told me the last time that the delivery guy was out on 7 deliveries. Ok I will be the 8th in line then. Nope. I would have to come in and pick it up.
SO I told the guy I would never be calling again. I can't believe this place. I have seen this attitude before and can't support businesses like that. I don't care how good they are.

They are a really small shop - but it is so worth it - the Cajun Chicken Cheesesteak is out of this world - filled with shredded cajun marinated chicken and roasted red peppers and then toasted with a cheesy topping - its a ridiculously good sandwhich.

You have to cut them some slack for being two guys running the joint and try this place - you won't regret it at all.

Plus they bake their own cookies - its insanely good.

We've gotten pizza a couple times, basically when we're too lazy to get take-out from Santarpio's, since Dough delivers. Half the time we call and there's no answer, the other half we get a tasty pizza (out of 4 or 5 times). I feel like we've also had a reuben from there, but it obviously wasn't extremely memorable.

That said, the guys are really nice, and the pizza's very good, so I hope they make a go of it. I'll have to try the other sandwiches sometime.

      2. We've ordered from there a number of times, and while delivery can be slow (or, as a previous poster indicated, simply not available), the food is always worth it! I'm a particular fan of their reuben assortment, but the farmer's dip and chicken wing pizzas are also fantastic. I think it's the kind of place, though, that does "specialty" pizzas better than traditional... I'd rather drive to Santarpio's if I was in the mood for a simple pepperoni.

Okay - I have to check out Santarpio's this week - I am a big Dough but just because our office is around the corner - I will do a pizza bake off between them and post the results.

dude, it's like the pizza equivalent of apples and oranges. I'm interested to know your thoughts - they're both so good!!

I had an experience similar to a previous poster. Stopped in to pick up a take out menu. We have an infant, so we tend to order takeout and the options in Eastie are pretty slim. The guys working weren't very friendly, but I figured they were probably just busy. The menu looked good and I wanted to like the place. Later in the week, I called to place an order and the phone rang and rang. I figured I must've gotten the number wrong, so I tried again. Finally, someone picked it up and hung up on me! I got the feeling that it was on purpose. So, they've never gotten my business. Too bad because I order takeout almost every Thursday--but it's from Kelley's-- where they answer the phone every time.
