Wanted to let everyone know about the incredible brunch my husband and I had at Niche this weekend. Most people I've talked to don't know that they do brunch, and it was absolutely quiet in there on a Saturday morning, so it's obvious that the word is not getting out. I want to share the goods so they get more business and don't stop serving brunch (selfish I know, but you have to look out for #1!).
I had their twist on Eggs Benedict. Instead of an english muffin, it was based on kind of an oat-cake thing, heavy on the butter and fall-aparty. Then a nice sized chunk of beautiful smoked tuna, topped with a beautiful fresh egg perfectly poached, and dressed with a slightly spicy, cumin-flavoured hollandaise. It was gorgeous. He served little wedges of grapefruit and orange on the side, garnished with a chiffonade of fresh basil. An excellent flavour combo (grapefruit and basil).
Hubby enjoyed his fresh, homemade pork sausage, which was served with beautiful fresh eggs, polenta and apple chutney.
We were very pleased with the portion sizes and the price (totally comparable to any other brunch spot in town, and maybe even cheaper than the Blue Fox for that matter). The service was attentive but we were also left to read our newspaper at our own pace.
I highly recommend that you try out Niche for brunch, if not for dinner (dinner is incredible too). This place is a real gem, tucked away on a sleepy street in James Bay. If they don't get busier in there on weekend mornings I am sure they will stop serving brunch soon, so be sure to get in there!
