Jiraffe

Anyone been here lately? Specific recommendations for dishes? Taking my husband there for his birthday. Was going to go to Melisse but have just heard such inconsistent things about it, didn't want to take the chance because it is so frightfully expensive.

  1. I went with a friend in December. It was pretty good. My friend started with pistachio encrusted foie gras which was excellent and I had the seared scallops. The scallops had a nice crust to them and were still warm, sweet, and tender on the inside. For his entree, my friend had a halibut with wild mushrooms and a light tomato broth baked in a pastry crust. The dish sounded more interesting than it was. It was a light dish, but the tomato broth and the mushrooms didn't quite permeate the fish. My pan fried stripped bass on the other hand was amazing. Both sides were fried to a delicious crispiness while the inside still managed to be moist and delicate. For dessert, my friend had a warm chocolate dessert (which escapes me) that he liked very much and I had a cup of decent coffee. Including a glass of wine, and tip, the bill came out to be $120. The lighting was subdued and the room wasn't as noisy as I had expected. Overall, I'd say that it was a solid experience.

I had a similar experience to this post just a few weeks ago. I had been toying with the idea of going to Melisse, but was finally persuaded that Jiraffe offered a similar experience at a much lower cost.

I thought the foie gras was terrific, although I was less impressed with what I thought was an overly sweet apple accompaniment.

The bacon wrapped scallops were perfect! And, my wife had a sea bass that she loved.

The service was impeccable. A very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. One of the most enjoyable meals I've had in some time.

      Highly recommended!
