I'm looking for somewhere to have a great steak tonight. I'm going to be at the National Gallery in the afternoon, so probably want to go somewhere for a drink and then dinner in the area or close by.

Thanks!

Well, did you find one? I am not sure that such a thing exists in London.

You might laugh at this, but the best steak I had in the last 12 months was at The Guinea Grill in Bruton Place. It came out of the blue and was totally unexpected. It was as if there was a perfect confluence in the steak universe and everything lined up. I sat there marveling at my good fortune, enjoying every morsel. If you go there, I doubt very much that you will have the same experience, so I am mentioning only as a matter of record.

Two weeks ago, I had the Chateaubriand at The Hoxton Grille, It was superb. Just a great piece of meat, perfectly medium-rare and with a good char. A week later, I was back for the same thing. Not quite so good.

Over the last couple of years people have reported good steaks at The Hawksmoor, the first two I had there were good, from then on, extremely variable. Smiths of Smithfield top floor. Again, good in its early days, now sadly inconsistent. Over in Olympia, the Popeseye, with their exceptional wine list and their 28 day wet aged meat, its a great concept. I would love them to invest in a decent spec grill and some proper extraction.

Buen Ayre in Broadway Market could be the way to go.

No exactly close by, and you don't get a choice of cuts, but Le Relais de Venise in Marylebone should satisfy a steak frite craving.

Not a "great steak" but we satisfy our cravings at Bar du Marche in Soho. Great steak frites. Easy walk from the National Gallery - have a drink beforehand at The Endurance right across the street.

I am one of those who has had excellent steaks at the Hawksmoor in Shoreditch and at the top floor of Smith's. The top floor of Smith's was particularly outstanding, I'm sorry to hear that it can be hit or miss.

Good old Bar du Marche. I've been going there for more than a decade. Not "great steak", as you say, but lovely frites and I like the atmosphere. Especially Patrick the terminally glum patron!

Rib Room, Carlton Tower Hotel, Knightsbridge. Superb. Owned by the Jumeirah Group so plenty of Lambos outside with squiggly wiggly/swiss number plates. Call a mortgage advisor first. http://www.jumeirahcarltontower.com/dining/the_rib_room/
