The West Valley has a new weird gem - Michael's Best on Winnetka in the Northwest corner of the Valley. I would have never gone in because the place looks like an unusually tacky coffee shop, but some friends took me there and the food was excellent. We had an excellent white bean and vegetable soup to start, followed by entrees of homemade fettuccini with shrimp, halibut over spinach, and a T-bone steak. I chose the steak and was delighted with it - it was almost as tender as a pot roast, and was topped with a red wine reduction with truffles. The pasta was homemade, the fish just about perfect. The berry creme brulee was excellent, the apple tart unfortunately wasn't due to too much of a caramel sauce that was too sweet. Full dinners can be had for $20 - 25 per person. Service was unfortunately a bit slow and disorganized, and they have no wines yet but also do not charge corkage. The atmosphere is actually passable once you're inside, it's just the exterior that is really ugly. Chef Miguel Martin used to be at DC3, and has the makings of something great going here.
Address is 8326 Winnetka Avenue, Winnetka.
