Help me choose...

I am considering the following places for my girlfriend's birthday dinner later this month. We have never been to any of them (a pre-requisite for the birthday dinner) and I was wondering if anyone could make any recommendations based on food, ambience, etc.

-Eleven Madison Park
-Perry St

Any other suggestions are welcome as well! Thanks.

  1. i used to recommend veritas but their new chef just doesnt do the place justice...a total shame as i used to be my favorite.

id go with cru if yr a oenophile and 11 madison overall...

    bouley if you havent been...

    1. If I were you, I would call ALL of them, right NOW and make a reservation. That is, if you can get one!

You can call and cancel the ones you decide against later. It may already be too late for many of these places, but I'd reserve now and decide with a bit of leisure over the next week or so among those reservations you've been able to score.

Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to never be able to get reservations because people make 4 or 5 for a given night? I would not recommend ever doing this given how unfair it is to other patrons as well as the restaurant.

I'd go to EMP or Bouley depending on whether you want to be uptown (for me that means above 14th st.) or downtown.

        2. I have my "go to" list with all of these restaurants on the top. Too weird. I go out like four times a week and these are the places that I have wanted to go to the most and haven't been to yet. Except Babbo which is excellent. I'm very interested to see the responses...

          1. From your list, I would definitely choose Eleven Madison Park: great food, service and decor.

            1. Hmm..I've only been to Cru, Eleven Madison and Veritas. I would rule out Verita first of the three. I enjoyed my food and service more at Cru overall. I think the ambience at Eleven Madison is nice with the big windows but I think it is a bit expensive for what you get. Cru on the other hand blew me away in every way.

              1. Absolutely love EMP but I PERSONALLY do not think it is particularly romantic, PERSONALLY, I think it borders on austere. I think Daniel, our favorite in NYC, is THE go to place for special occasions with Bouley close behind.

The only one I would say you should deep six is Veritas.
Otherwise, it is a toss up depending on what you like best. (My personal choice would be Daniel). Perhaps a perusal of all the different menus will help you make your choice.
                  It's a good list.

                2. OK, I made reservations at Cru, Eleven Madison Park & Bouley (still waiting on Daniel). Can you guys tell me a little bit more about the ambience/atmosphere of these places? Thanks again!

As regulars on this board know, Eleven Madison Park is our favorite NYC restaurant right now. The huge space is gorgeous, but despite the size, the noise level remains comfortable and conversation-friendly. Service is polished, yet also very cordial, with not a hint of stuffiness, and the overall ambiance is quite relaxed. Chef Humm, who is sweet and very self-effacing, often comes out of the kitchen, usually toward the latter part of the evening service, to stop by tables and chat with patrons because he's always interested in getting their feedback.

                    Enjoy and Bon Appetit!

                  2. Eleven Madison Park. But I would also consider something more romantic with a better atmosphere - like Allen & Delancey, AOC Bedford, Annisa, or Mas Farmhouse
