I hadn't been to Glendale in 5 years until this weekend when my man decided to buy a car for himself. I was dreaming of my lunches at Zankou Chicken and Porto's, especially after jenji's mention of the latter, and especially, too, because every once in a while I get these insane cravings for either roasted or fried chicken.

So after four hours of negotiating with the car salesman, and two trips down the 134, my honey lovingly treated me by indulging my desires! First, we went to Zankou for lunch. I ripped apart my 1/4 chicken (I would've ordered more had we not expected guests for dinner shortly thereafter) - it was hot, juicy, and tender and the skin - sigh - pure salty garlic crunch heaven.

It's a good thing I was still hungry when we motored over to Porto's, because I had to have my favorite Cuban treat - the papa rellena. Being Sunday, the place was absolutely JAMMED! Everyone grabbed a number and a spot - at least 5 deep, 10 wide - in front of the counter. This made it difficult to peak at the beautiful pastries inside, and also gave my man a severe swoon of the claustophobic kind. I let him wait outside, while I patiently waited my turn. My number was 59, and the number on the display was 99. But the line went quickly. For a mere $9.90, I got a beautiful round loaf of bread and some gorgeous tiramisu and fruit tarts and cakes for my dinner, a guava and cheese pastry for the slightly hyperventilating gentleman, and of course the papa rellena for me. And how was that papa? Mmmm! Perfectly seasoned ground beef in a lightly fried potato ball. Fried chicken skin and a fried potato ball. What more could you ask for?

My journey to Glendale was divine! All this and a new car, too! Very exciting for a girl who's never driven off the lot in a brand new car before, much less on over to a couple of my favorite old haunts!
