Highland Kitchen last night

  • 1

In a word: awesome.

In a few more words: Went with a group of friends for dinner last night (New Years' Eve) and they took great care of us. Was surprised that the place was not more crowded, but I guess that word needs to get out about the place, and I'm pretty sure it will. The menu reminds me of a cross between Green St. and Deep Ellum (not surprising given the owner is formerly from Green St). Great food, solid bartending, good beer list, and the jukebox ... well, let's just say that you can't go wrong with Tom Waits, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, and ZZ Top.

Started with the blue cheese fondue, mussels in lobster broth with tomatoes and chorizo (excellent!!!), pan-seared scallops, and spicy fried calamari. Calamari seems to pop up on every midrange restaurant menu these days but this one was fairly spicy and much better than the usual stuff. For mains, a bunch of us ordered the braised short ribs with mashed potatoes and broccoli rabe, which got rave reviews. Others had the pan-fried catfish with hushpuppies (oh yeah), mahi mahi special, roast chicken ... everyone seemed really happy. A couple of desserts were ordered but they were consumed so fast that they were gone by the time I got back from feeding more quarters into the jukebox. Hmph.

Bartending is good -- excellent selection of whiskies and rums (spied a bottle of Zacapa 23 yo on the shelf) -- some fairly interesting old-school cocktails such as a Sazerac, Bourbon Smash, and Scofflaw.

Complaints? Not really... service was fine though it wasn't too busy. I found the lighting incredibly harsh, though once the kitchen closed they turned it down to a more comfortable level. A few folks commented that it was kind of chilly. Knock back a few more sazeracs and you'll feel warm enough...

This is a great addition to the neighborhood - really worth checking out.
