wedding reception venues
Hi, I just got engaged last night and would like to some suggestions for reception locations. I would like to have it on the water or a place with great views. Most of the guests will be coming from Manhattan and northern or central NJ. Manhattan is out due to the prices. thanks for any suggestions.

First where are you having the reception? Westchester, Jersey, Long Island? My BIL got married last year at Tappan Hill in Tarrytown. It was very nice, but IMO not as great as the reputation, but they were extrememly happy and service was wonderful. Beautiful facility.
Also in Westchester are lots of wedding venues in New Rochelle with water views although I have not been to any of them.
I got married about 11 years ago on eastern LI at Timberpoint which is on the water and run by Lessings. I think they have some newer, and nicer locales now although at the time it was their best one and we had a great wedding.
A good source my SIL used was the local boards on theknot.com since she planned the wedding from Boston.

Congrats and welcome!
FYI - keep your requests food centric or your post will probably get deleted...
The Food at Tappan Hill was definitely better than your average wedding reception food. The views were pretty I was there last fall for a wedding and I think fall would have the best views imo.
I had my wedding reception at The Surf Club in New Rochelle. Location would be central for all your guests, and the views of the water are beautiful. The place reminds me of a Newport (RI) mansion and the upstairs ballroom that I used has a high terrace overlooking the water that they use for the cocktail hour. Which btw serves tons of food. I was told the food was good, although I didn't have time to eat much, but what I did have was quite good.
As pp poster mentioned there are a lot of other places on Davenport in New Rochelle, but the Surf club has the best views IMO. The VIP (also on davenport) had very good food as well (maybe even better than Surf club), but not really the water view I was looking for.
Good Luck and theknot.com is a great resource if you don't get much info here.

My daughter has wedding reception planned for this July at the VIP Club on Davenport Road in New Rochelle. The food is excellent -- abundant and presented with a flair, but also of good quality, which is unusual for wedding fare.

Congratulations!! :o) 2008's gonna be a great year for you both! :)
For reception places on the water - rolise, Sweetpea & foodie mentioned the reception places in New Rochelle - The Surf Club and the VIP. I've heard nothing but good things about these places.
Another place in Westchester with a beautiful view of the Palisades is The Riverview in Hastings. My sister got married there in 2002. The food and service were terrific too.
If you and your families are willing to travel a little further north - right on the border of Westchester and Putnam counties is Sinapi's Ceola Manor - in Jefferson Valley. Hubby and I went to a wedding there in September. They had an outdoor ceremony over looking Lake Osceola - very pretty and good cocktail hour food, main dishes and Viennese hour.
Happy New Year & best wishes to you and your fiancé! :o)

I had my wedding at the Women's Club of White Plains. Their catering is on the simpler side. Cocktail hour is passed hors d'oeurves, crudites, bruschetta, and fruit and cheese with other options at an additional charge. You don't get the "dinner before dinner" option (which I always think of as excessive anyway). Still, my guests and I enjoyed the food quite a bit. We had two entree options and a vegetarian option with a salad and appetizer course (in my case it was pasta). They only do one wedding a day. The building and grounds are lovely, although the ballroom is a little bit bland. I can tell you where you can see photos of my wedding if you're interested.

My husband and I were married at the Glen Island Harbour Club, also in New Rochelle, but a bit separate from the other clubs so it felt a little less generic. It's on an island that's a park right on the water. They have a nice room for the ceremony upstairs with a view, and then there's a ballroom upstairs and another ballroom downstairs that also has windows and a view of the water. I remember the first time we went they only showed us the upstairs ballroom because we wanted to do the ceremony there. (Like most places, they do 2 weddings at the same time sometimes, depending on the time of year, day of the week and time of day. We were able to do the ceremony upstairs and the reception in the room downstairs because we did it on a Sunday afternoon.)
The food at the wedding was very good -- standard wedding fare but done very nicely, and they were very accommodating with the menu. If you make an appointment to go, ask for Bob -- he's a very nice guy, though I've heard the others can be gruff. www.gi-hc.com
From what I've heard the most spectacular views of Manhattan are at a Hyatt Regency in Jersey City -- but it's just as pricey as Manhattan, I think.
Good luck!
