New (?) Croissants at Zabar's?

So I stopped by Zabar's today to find a sign announcing their new croissants from France.
How new are these and has anyone given these a try? They were all out by the time I arrived and so were the S&S cheesecakses!! Third time I missed those little suckers. I gotta get there early one of these days.

I realize this is late in the game but they're the only croissants I buy except for the pretzel croissants Trader Joe's in Detroit (Grosse Pointe, actually) sells. I really like them.

I like them because they're crisper, flakier, and less . . . steroidal, I guess is where I'm going, than their regular croissants. I don't think you'll be disappointed--make sure you post back. They strike me as more of what croissants might have been like before they were marketed to U.S. consumers in a big way.

BTW, I think they import the pre-shaped frozen pastry from France and then bake them here.

I promise to report back. Walked over there late yesterday afternoon but, of course, they were all sold out again. I fully understand your description + it's exactly what I like to hear. Can you see the layers? I guess it's better they are baked here (e.g. freshness) but I'm sure those French ovens are magical.

Layers, if memory serves, are better detected once you bite into them. (I haven't had them in a while--I buy them to accompany omelettes.)

                BTW . . . layers. I checked. :)

Thnx!! I've been remiss. Hoping to walk the 10 blocks over there this weekend early enough to snag one and finally report back.

I bought a couple last week when I was uptown. They were good! I have to mention, though, that I've never had a problem getting them, no matter what time I go. I guess you just haven't been lucky. :O

I went in last weekend and was told they typically sell out by noon on weekends and even earlier on weekdays. :(
