Paella in Silverlake

  • m

Enjoyed surprisingly good paella in suprising & friendly storefront in Silverlake--Glendale Blvd @ Duane--modestly named Spain Restaurant. In their "mixed" version, patiently prepared & subtlely seasoned, the flavors of the mussels, clams, shrimp, sausage (the real deal), fish & chicken in modest portions were enriched, not overwhelmed. Nice serrano ham tapa, but "classic" Spanish chicken salad, i.e., dry roasted chicken & dry lettuce. Inexpensive to moderately priced.
Yet another surprise from this dreary strip mall--the convenience store provided a rich, full Spanish red, which the restaurant set up for a $1 "glasses" charge. All leisurely--another bow to Spanish culture--served & consumed in what can best be described as a Spanish restaurant/deli as decorated by a Thai interior designer.

On the paella front, I was impressed by the one at the Hollywood farmer's market at Vine and Fountain (or thereabouts) on Sunday's.
