My husband and I enjoyed steaks and burgers last week at Nauvoo Grill in Fair Haven. The sides, mashed potatoes, rice and/or grilled vegetables were all satisfying and we enjoy fireplace dining; NGC has a lovely fireplace area. We're watching our calories so we skipped dessert that night but some of the specials mentioned (a cake with spiced pears) sounded tempting.
We were just at Danny's last Saturday evening. After a middling visit last Spring, I was in no rush to return. But finding ourselves kidless unexpectedly we decided that on a Saturday night in Red Bank we were going to wait to be seated wherever we ended up, so the deciding factor in Danny's favor was the bar. I have to say, we had an excellent porterhouse for 2. The porterhouse was off the menu the last time we had been, so I was happy to see it back. (When asked, Danny said it was price prohibitive at the time) Cooked perfectly and seasoned with s +p... I'm not a big fan of overly seasoned steak.
I started with sashimi after watching the sushi chef break down a tuna loin while we were waiting/cocktailing at the bar. Very fresh, yellowtail was good as well. Wifey had a 1/2 caesar that was just o.k. Sides to the steak were spinach w/oil and garlic and a wild mushroom risotto. Spinach was very good...if spinach can be very good that is. Risotto was good, nice amount of mushrooms in it. No dessert this time around.
Porterhouse for 2 was $60, we got out for $100.
I had intended to go and to try Anna's Italian Kitchen for the first time ,but being a Monday it was closed. The next idea was La Pasteria in Red Bank.Checked the website and it said they were open until 10.00pm.We arrived at 9.00 to be greeted by somewhat confused FOH staff who weren't sure if they were still open....upon a kitchen conference they advised that if we could order in a hurry we could be seated (in the empty restaurant give a 4 top - yes the recession is hurting business and the place doesn't need any more ).We decided that this was not a good idea and did a 180.Where next ?O.K lets try Danny's Steakhouse.Again it's probably 9.15 and there is just a smattering of diners on this beautiful Summer night.Great they are STILL serving. We order some Spring rolls,Calamari and a Steak Salad with Gorgonzola,Pears and candied Pecans. The Rolls were O.K and the Calamari was good - light ,crispy and the Marinara sauce standard. The Steak salad was a complete disaster however.Burnt and bitter candied nuts, soggy tinned pears and a scrap of meat that should never have found it's way from the bench to the grill, let alone a "Steakhouse" customer. In fairness, the waitress removed the additional charge for the meat from the salad, but if truth be told the whole thing should never have been served IMO.I've just discovered two more reasons not to dine in Red Bank.Sad.
