Ray's Saloon in Tallahassee

I've had a few beers and eaten at Ray's Steel City Saloon (a mirror-like image of their 'florida-restaurant' in Pittsburgh) and I have to say BEST place for a microbrew on this side of town. I Love the Leon Pub ( in a smoky, dirty, whore kind of way) but Ray's has good beer AND good food so if you don't like the cigarette smoke of Leon Pub then drinkers of fine brew have a new watering hole in upper-midtown Tallahassee.

  1. A couple of weeks ago, I would have seconded your opinion Robert. Had a nice Smithwick on tap and the bartender was up on his stuff (would even let you try an iron City or Genese on a bar bet if you dared) and pointed out a coupel of very nice selections from their large cooler. Perogies were very tasty and they had a goo chowder that night. But a followup visit just a week or so ago found us seated in a nearly deserted dining area, cold hot food and indifferent service, out of half the good stock in the beer cooler and on tap. Maybe Pittsburgh's recent losing streak has them in the dumps. We were going to give it a shot for New Year's Eve until that last visit.

I also had been really impressed on my first few visits. We went last weekend and the service was awful. The food was served cold and a waitress spilled coke all over my lap. I didn't even get an apology from the manager. Our server apologized for the other waitstaff and got me a towel. They only had 3 servers for a busy dinner service. We will go back with hopes that they work it out once the student servers get back.

I have seeing that Ray's Steel City Saloon is a new restaurant it takes time for the kinks to be worked out. I have been there a few times and have found each time to be an enjoyable experience. I have found the service to be great and have had the same server on these occasions that remembers me and treats me well. The food is different but can satisfy anyone in your party. My favorite dish is the rabbi rueben with onion rings or the yacht club very tasty. Good beer selection and full bar. I think for Tallahassee it hits the nail on the head not a chain bar/restaurant. I'll be back.

    2. Have been there twice in the last two weeks. It is close to where we live... but I always thought it was just a bar, so did not take the family there. GREAT food/service both times. I was very impressed with the menu and the unusual offerings. Some of the best "bar food" I've had. Certainly the best this town has seen.

Not being a regular here since little reason to head over to the Mall, all I can say is that the bar area is better thant he dining room and if you get the bartender in the right mood, you'll get good service and decent rec on food and brew to try. Otherwise, if you don't know exactly what you want the bartenders won't give you the time of day and then ignore you until you get up and look like your'e heading toward the door. Watch the difference in the cooking time for the food or the order that cooks quickest just sits until the other orders for the table are done and then gets a flash warmup in the nuker.

      2. I've had two BAD overpriced meals in a row. The owner (wife) had nos sense of decorum in dealing with the situations. The dining room is dark and dingy. The server staff means well but gets no support from management. I would NEVER go here again!
