My Mother and stepfather are coming to visit this weekend and want to "see the city". Its a last minute trip and I am not prepared. They don't like shopping and my stepdad won't do museums. As for food my mom will try anything but stepdad is a strictly meat and potatoes kind of guy. What can I do with them??? They also want to go out Sat night but I don't know where to bring them. I'm 24 and anywhere I usually go I don't think they will like. They like classic rock and drink beer and traditional cocktails... nothing fancy. Any suggestions? Somewhere with live music would be good. PLEASE HELP!!!

If he likes meat 'n' potatoes and she doesn't care, then go for one of the good steakhouses. If you go to Gallagher's then you'll be in the theater district and can look at all the lights and the hubbub of Times Square. If the weather is OK, take the E train down to Ground Zero (end of line at Chambers St.) and walk around Battery Park area. Drinks/coffee/hot chocolate/something at the nice hotel down there overlooking the harbor (Hyatt?). Wave at the Statue of Liberty. You can also tour Rock Center - the tree - Xmas windows - the skating rink. I don't know what part of town you'll be based in, but all of this is accessible by subway - nothing more New York than that! Can't help you on Sat. night -- no clue about the club scene for any generation. What about theater? Big Apple Circus?

I forgot to mention that Gallagher's started as a speakeasy during Prohibition and was turned into a restaurant after that - it's a nice NY story - Gallagher's and "21 Club" are the only 2 speakeasies left in town.

I'd say a steakhouse, or bbq. Maybe Blue Smoke? Downstairs has a full menu and music. Not sure if you'll need to buy tickets on a specific night.

I would suggest Motor City but I think I would die if I took my parents to a bar on the LES. How about one of the nicer bars that serve great cocktails - Pegu Club, Employees Only, Little Branch. If those are little too fancy for your parents' taste, how about Ginger Man? The crowd there tends to be a little older and they have great beers on tap. There's also the chain of Heartland Breweries around the city, all of which have pretty good food (huge portions) and really good beer.

One last suggestion: BB King Blues Club near Times Square. They usually have some sort of classic rock cover band or something playing there for free in the lounge area (in addition to the shows in the club) http://www.bbkingblues.com/schedule/moreinfo.cgi?id=2790

I second the suggestion for Blue Smoke, but, just so you know, it's upscale BBQ (not sure if that is up your stepdad's alley).

How about Keens? It has a wonderful, old New York atmosphere, and the porterhouse for two is great. It's not cool or hip, but a fun place to dine at, at least once in your life. The service there has always been excellent. If your stepdad is a scotch fan, he will appreciate their vast collection of scotches. I've never had any trouble getting a last minute reservation there, either.
