anybody been there recently. how's the food. is the gumbo any good. any great dishes?
I STOPPED BY A FEW MONTHS AGO FOR LUNCH DURING THE WEEK. IT WAS EMPTY SO I HAD A CHANCE TO CHAT WITH THE OWNER/COOK, A PLEASANT LOW-KEY FELLOW WHO WAS WILLING TO FIRE UP THE STOVE JUST FOR ME. UNFORTUNATELY, WHILE THE FOOD (SOUP AND A CHICKEN DISH) WAS OK, WHAT I REMEMBER ABOUT THE MEAL WAS THE PRICE. QUITE PRICEY. THE PLACE SEEMS TO HAVE AN IDENTITY CRISIS. UPSCALE DECOR AND PRICES IN A DOWNSCALE NEIGHBORHOOD & OFFERING FOOD BEST CHARACTERIZED AS SOUTHERN, COUNTRY FOOD...? NEVER BEEN BACK.
I just went to Pshaws the other night. Had the catfish. It was very good...probably the best I've had in LA, but nothing like actual bayou food. The person I was with had gumbo and red beans and rice and had nothing but good things to say.
After you've tried Pshaws you should also venture around the corner to Roscos Chicken and Waffles--it's always excellent and sometimes the waitresses will hug you (don't know why, it just happened).
