Saw that Christopher Elbow will be having a store on Hayes St near Octavia..said opening late Fall..is it delayed or is it Fall 2008?
------
Miette Confiserie: Finally got to check out this candy shop Thurs 12/27/07. Closest Bart stop is Civic Center, turn Right on Hayes then walk 5 blocks to Octavia. It's across from the Park over there.

It's bigger than the Candy Store that I visited a few months ago. It's a very cute shop.

I got some unusual candy to me that I hope are good:

3400 Phinney Coffee Dark Chocolate bar - $4.50 - haven't tried yet.

Freia Melkesjokolade -milk chocolate bar 100g - price around $5 (I think) - This is supposed to be really creamy said the sales lady, I haven't tried it yet.

Theo Special Limited Edition Venezuela 91% Cacao - price around $5 I think. - haven't tried yet.

My total was $15. They take credit cards.

They have other candies in containers, Vosges candy bars, though no Mo's Bacon Bar when I went; lots of Miette cookies, macarons - 5 flavors to pick from, cupcakes $3 ea. Brownies: with or without nuts $2.5; mini Scharffen Berger cake $5; chocolate truffle tart $5; banana bread mini picknicker $3; carrot cake picknicker $5

No baskets either, I got to sample the 3400 Phinney bread & dark chocolate - they ran out by Christmas 2007. Bummer.
------
Thai House Express:
The nearest Bart stop is Civic Center & it's about a 10 block walk in the Tenderloin.
Windy & I tried these dishes:

chicken soup $7.25 -had a small spoon for taste-just ok, bland chicken soup w/ thin rice noodles & lots of chicken.

pork leg stew noodle soup $8.25-I requested no bean sprouts. They didn't have any wide noodles which I love so maybe that's why I didn't like it as much, got thin rice noodles instead. Soup was ok, veggie couldn't taste them.

larb (under salad) $7.25-choice of ground chicken, pork or beef w/ chili, onions, rice powder & lemon dressing. We got pork. It was good. It was spicy w/ lots of ground pork & raw onions and some slices of cabbage that I didn't eat.

2 hot Thai tea $1.25 each. Just ok for me. Just flavored tea, not what I was expecting. I'd stick to cold Thai iced tea if I go again.

Subtotal $25.25 + tax $2.15 = $27.40 before tip.

Separate bathrooms (you need a key) both upstairs.

Hrs: Noon to Midnight Everyday!
-----
Belly Good Cafe & Crepes:
We went here after shopping at Ichiban Kan in Japantown. It's next to May's Coffee shop.

They have all kinds of crepes. Prices range from $3-$4.

I got a custard & nutella crepe $3.50 - you get it wrapped or on a plate, & it comes w/ whipped cream unless you tell them. I thought it was ok because I love nutella, otherwise it's kinda boring. Can't taste the custard & it's so pale yellow like it's undercooked. I prefer it more crispy.

I also got 2 pieces of ice-cream mochi $1.99. You have to get both in the same flavor so I picked green tea. Just ok for me. Cold & chewy that's all I could taste, not much flavor of green tea ice-cream at all.

Total was $5.79. Probably won't go back again.

I don't have to add except the woman who helped me at Miette was a true licorice evangelist. I've had laryngitis for days, and she was determined to sway me to the salty licorice whales. I got some and also some chewier licorice gums--she mentioned all kinds of flavor notes I could detect, if my throat weren't already numb from living on Ricola.

Agree, the chicken soup at THE was very bland, although maybe what I needed. I liked the broth on the pork leg noodle soup better.

The "custard" on the crepe was a spray of sweetened condensed milk.

I too, visited Miette's candy store for the first time last week --- I was skeptical for some reason but really left there liking the people and the store. At home tried the pretty candied almonds -- very good. So fresh! The almonds have that snap!

Also tried a piece of the caramel-- delicious, and the rocky road (hmmm... different, not what I expected).

I have a Lake Champlain hazelnut chocolate bar and malt balls left to try. Looking forward to it.
