help! dinner in Union Square

I'm planning a weekend trip in SF from LA. By the time we arrive at our hotel in Union Square (right next to the Powell St. BART station) on Friday night, we would have been in the car for 7 hours. What scrumptious eats are open late and within good walking distance? I want something that'll hit the spot after a long tiring drive.. maybe even a lounge place...that'll introduce all of us to SF and warm us up for the rest of the weekend. Thanks!!

Please clarify "late" -- that is really subjective in this town as many restaurants stop serving by 10:00. Just up from Union Square there is a 24-hour Indian restaurant, Naan N' Curry -- across the street from the Hilton. Not exactly a lounge place though...

Thanks for the suggestions. By "late" I mean after 10 pm, so 24 hour places are always great. The cafes sound like a great idea, and I'll keep the Indian restaurants in mind too.

Osha Thai serves until 2 or 3 a.m. The block gets a little grimy as you head uphill, so stay aware of your surroundings.

Bar Crudo is my favorite spot near Union Square - they serve until 11pm on the weekends. Farmerbrown is good as well and a short cab/long walk is Oola.

How late is late. John's grill is open until 10:00. Easy walk.

Sultan has excellent Indian food in sumptuous surroundings. Afterward, go to Bar Drake in the lobby of the Sir Francis Drake (not to be confused with the Westin St. Francis) for cocktails.
