Quick Report Back from Scottsdale
Thank you all for the reccomendations. I wanted to report back to share my experiences with you. I am sad to report that this trip, the food was not as good, all around as the last trip.
After a nice flight, we went straight to Barrio Cafe. It was an off night there, unfortunately. The guac was as good as always, but the fish tacos were soggy, the cochinita pibil lacking its usual robust sour orange flavor, and the churros dry. Could not even get down with a maragarita, as it was SO strong and bitter. Alas, I will return, as it is usually one of my favorites.
Greasewoods on two occasions for local color, live music and green chile bacon cheese burgers, which was great. Love this place. On the other hand, went to Harold's Corral and the food was awful.
Other dinners: second night, we had to humor friends and go to Skye. Never a place I would pick when I have Maestro's in the backyard. It was exactly what I expected.
The third night we stayed in and ate at Crescent Moon and had a great dinner. Between the ambience outdoors fireside, the fabulous spaghetti pomodoro, and tender, falling off the bone lamb shank, and a great bottle of pinot, it was great!
The Fourth night, xmas eve, we went to Pure. Our waiter, Timothy, was fabulous. Very attentive and knowledgable. Expensive place with rolls that are jsut above average. I did not think that some of the flavor combos worked well. Between the five of us, we tried eight rolls--almost all of them--many apps and various sakes. Meanwhile, the owner was there--we were eating and spending like drunken sailors--and the ONLY TABLE there--WITH a birthday, and he did not bother to come over once. Even the birthday dessert, we were charged for--I would not return. Headed over to Hacienda for spanish coffees which reign supreme..
The final night, we went to T. Cook's. As always, phenomenal rooms, views and space. Very cozy. The service was outstanding. The food, average. Short ribs dry and very overcooked. Salads, no flavor. Service was amazing. Manager equally excellent. I want to love this place and will keep returning until I have a great meal, darn it!
So, that's it this trip. will need to find some new great spots when I return in March for baseball.
Thanks for everything and happy new year.
Interesting. On my most recent visit to Barrio, I experienced pretty much the same letdowns. Namely, the pibil lacked the expected citrus+achiote zip and the margs tasted like they had been made from limes that were well past their prime. Our queso fundido con chorizo was also a disappointment.
Like you, I try to be charitable and chalk such things up to the kitchen having an off night, so I'm willing to give Barrio another chance to charm me.
Thanks for the report. Hope you have better luck in the spring.
