Eastern Maritime restaurant for "Fish and Brewis"

My friend from the "ROCK" says I got to try some original Newfie down east food and suggested starting with some " Fish and Brewis" but he can't tell me where to find a decent place that serves a reasonable facsimile of that traditional favourite. I told him if anyone in Toronto would know it would be the "Chowhounders". Don't let me down now.

      Thanks for referring that thread to me Gary. I did read it, Uunfortunately, in perusing it I did not discover any establishments in the GTA where I might experience a squid jig or F&B dinner. Did I miss something?

        As I mentioned in another thread, Fish and Brewis is not hard to make at home. The only unusual thing required is the hard bread, but this can be found in a number of Newfoundland specialty shops. I have a cookbook which gives a very clear recipe for making it, the book is called "Fat-Back and Molasses", published in St. John's by Rev. Ivan F. Jesperson. If you can't find it, there are probably other recipes on the Internet, for example.

      I have been corrected by my same Maritime friend who reminds that it's " BREWS" not brewIS .
      Don't want to insult the good folks down on "THE ROCK", now do we?
      Drop the " I"
      Always thought it was" BREWS" until I saw it written somewhere on a CH thread and I changed it. Was it you eckammin that started ths misnomer?

        The "brewis" (not "brews") spelling is the one I got from the cookbook I mentioned, written by a clergyman in St. John's.

        I am reminded of the story about the Newfoundland hostess who offered a guest some fish and brewis. "Thank you", he said "but just one brew, please."

          I like that!

          I've seen it listed as Fish and Brewis on menus in St. John's as well. The pronounciation is obviously not as it is noted in the spelling. Maybe that's just another way of identifying those of us visiting from away.

          It's spelled "brewis" but pronounced "brews". But your friend would probably be more insulted by being called a Maritimer. Newfoundland is not part of the Maritimes.

          I find Fish and Brewis to be a rather bland and stodgy dish. I'm not sure why it's so popular - nostalgia, perhaps.

            Maybe it's just a natural tendency to rebel. After all, we're all so dietarily correct these days, no MSG (it might make the food taste better - horrors!) munchy, underdone veggies (might lose a vitamin), and so on. Fish and brewis is, after all, practically poisonous, with all that salt and pork fat.

        3. Brigadoon Restaurant at 1109 Victoria Park does Jiggs dinner every Sunday. I haven't been there, but it's apparently a comfy neighborhood place from what I hear. My SO is from the Rock so I've eaten pretty much every Newfie food but flipper pie- I just can't bring myself to eat it. I think the appeal of fish & brews is that it is the ultimate Nfld. comfort food- there's just something about the texture and flavour that is really lovely [we add butter & onions to ours too]. Another comfort food from there is tautons [fried bread dough eaten with molasses- better than it sounds!] although you'd have to make it at home- I doubt anywhere in T.O. actually serves it, although in Newfoundland you can get it at the Irving gas station restaurant!

          1. You need to check out Wally's Newfoundland Meat Market - on the corner of Keele and Eglinton. Just go to Eglinton West and take any bus that will drop you at that intersection - tell the driver you want to be dropped off at Keele. This store is the most amazing Newfoundland food store! He says he's been there for 30 years or so. Call him before you go and he'll stay open for you. He only accepts cash, though.
            I went in and bought purity hard bread (for brewis), salt cod, pork (for scrunchins), caramel logs, bottle of bakeapples (I just made jam with them)... he has everything you want to make any Newfoundland food.
            So, go check out Wally - he's the best!
